One cure fits all - intentionally screwed sound?

I was just listening NANE for the first time and was blown away with it!! Wooow! It is raw, but with a style, power and T? trademark sound.
But the sound is crystal clear. So was in Shameless or High anxiety… and albums before that.

Apparently, that’s not the case in One cure fits all.
I like that album very much, but sometimes I got tired of hearing drums (snare) or guitars buried deep in the mix… Was it mastered at all (I searched the booklet and couldn’t find the mastering guy)?

But that makes me think… maybe the guys just wanted to have more “demo” sound? They are too experienced and too good to allow this “mistake” by accident.
In the end, it makes a contrast… because the whole album is pretty straight and accessible song wise, yet the mix is practically non-mastered.

Or maybe my ears need a little cleansing? ;)

no ur ears dont need cleaning, in fact, some of the WoMbles have said the same thing, u cant hear the snare for shit, the cymbals drowns out the music in some places, the bass is too loud. its a very good record dont get me wrong, but its let down by such lacklustre production :(

I agree - the guitar sound is the big plus on this album. I found the NANE production cool and powerfull, but am not a fan of Fuzz effects on guitar.

I think on OCFA the individual instruments sound cool, but the mix is a bit messy. Was all recorded live, so no wonder I guess.

I mean, OCFA is far from unlistenable, it just could’ve been that extra bit better, from a production point of view, and there are maybe four tracks that to me scream “filler”.

Maybe that’s the only reason why some songs sound ok, while others are little murky.

But I disagree with you about fillers…
It does have one or two weaker tracks… but even Troublegum had that.

P.S. I didn’t know that OCFA was recorded live like SP:YF?? Huh?

There is another thread going at the moment regarding a dutch interview with Andy. In that interview he talks about recording the album. I had thought that each instrument was recorded individually, but according to the interview they were recorded live.

I always thought the production on OCFA was very good, nice modern crisp sound.

I think just the main rhythm components were recorded live, and then Andy would have overdubbed various guitars.

I quite like Into the light… at first I didn’t, but now it’s one of my favourites and I like to play it loud!

Like The Holy Bible - its the claustrophobic production that makes that album what it is.

Same as Nurse’s ” Recorded in an empty swimming pool ” sound makes it what it is.

It suits the mood of the songs.

I do think it just needs a good remastering. It’s a bit quiet by today’s standards..like most stuff put out at that time.

Just listen to the songs included on So Much For the 10 Year Plan. They sound great, and they weren’t re-mixed, just amped up a bit.

OCFA sounds too flat to me, and tracks like deluded son (good song imho) get abused by the production somewhat.

Solid and very strong effort. Hearing the songs live added the new dimension. I especially liked Our white noise live.
