Paradise Lost - The Enemy

Taken fron the PL news section of their site

On April 13th, 2007 long-running British gothic metal leaders PARADISE LOST will release the first single taken off their much anticipated upcoming Century Media Records debut “In Requiem”, which sees the band combine the classic heaviness of “Draconian Times” with the melodic feel of their more recent studio albums. The new single “The Enemy” will only be released in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy.

The single will be available to UK fans in the May edition of Metal Hammer Magazine, and signed copies will be available at the Koko gig in London, as well as the Metalmania Festival in Poland. We will also be stocking the single for sale in the Paradise Lost online shop.

They kind of lost me after that. Saw them recently supporting Opeth and wasn’t that impressed to be honest.

Seem to be a bit more goth than death nowadays (not a bad thing).

You at the Dublin Opeth gig? I thought PL were alright at it, they only had about 35 minutes.

The new one is coming out on vinyl, which is great news as One Second was the last time they had a vinly release.

I don’t know what it is about Paradise Lost that prevents me from really liking them - can’t put my finger on it exactly.

Saw them live and I wasn’t really blown away. Same goes for all of their recent releases.

When I want to listen to something goth like, I prefer Type O Negative.

What’s the new stuff like then? I saw them in Download, two or three years ago, which ever one it was where T? Headlined the Napster stage on the Sunday - they were pretty good although I didn’t recognize too many of the songs… I don’t thin they played anything of Icon and I prefer that to DT, mind you I’ve got a nasty habit of always preferring bands disaster albums to their critically acclaimed ones. I mean the guitar playing on True Belief is great, the lead intro then the dark riff

So what’s the new stuff like then?

One Second came after DT. Totally different to DT, loads of piano, keyboards, less guitars but still heavy in a way. Great album, probably my fave.

Host went further onto keyboard and string land. You can’t tell if some bits are guitar or keyboards, the cheek. Steve Lyon produced it and he did programming for the Depeche Mode Songs of… tour. Some very DM bits on it. Its a good album, some love it some hate it. Personally i think its alright, but it doesn’t really do it for me though. It was ment to be a side project by the way.

Believe In Nothing came after that. It was a return to guitars but the mix went wrong and it came out sounding a bit weak and unPL like if you will. Some great tracks on it though. Some of my friends who never really got into PL think this album is great so there you go. I think its alright, some great tracks as i said but its not one i put often, although i will after this.

Symbol of Life was next and this was definatly a return to form. Rhys Fluber produced it and it sounds great. Lots of different styles as such on there. First couple of tracks are slightly industrial in so far as they are very tight and anthemic. They did a cover of small town boy by bronski beat for the digi pack cd and it was great. The guitars were pretty heavy and it saw the return of some lead playing from Greg, tasty. Great album, i’d highly recommend it.

The last one was self titled as it was their 10th lp and the first one was called Lost Paradise, clever eh. Very much a guitar album. Heavy stuff but it has some other stuff thrown in. Rhys Fluber produced it so the production was very good. Some graet lead guitar on this one from Greg, love the solo on ‘All you leave Behind’.

Thats the best i can do to give a run down, i’m not the best at describing the sounds of records so i’v probably done them an injustice. Check out their MySpace site and you might hear something off those records.

How did the older songs (sweetness, eternal, gothic…) come across? Was the music changed in order to fit nicks “new” singing style?

The old stuff sounded great, Still the same structures and Nick just sings them they way he would if they had written them lately. Nice to hear Gothic, they had the female vocals and strings on backing track so i hope it comes out ok. Eternal was fantastic and its nice to see that Sweetness may get the dvd treatment.

Must say i had a great night, still smiling about it. :D

Oh ya and The Enemy single is great, comes with a 5 minute trailer of the documentry thats coming up

I’m not the greatest guitar player but my plan is to learn the solo for Pity the Sadness some day, i’m a while off it yet mind. Ever heard the live version of Daylight Torn that was left off the Harmony Breaks vid but was put on the DT bonus cd? Its great, i’ll email it to anyone who wants it. There are some weaker songs on it mind but i love the attidude of that record and the structures of the songs.

Listening to One Second for the first time in a long time the last few days and i forgot how good it was, probably my favourite PL album, although don’t hold me to that.

Ya BIN is weak but if some other band came out of nowhere and released it they would probably make the cover of Kerrrapp!! instead of getting a 1K review. Remember that? Bastards.
