This Is England

I cannot begin to express how good this film is. Skinheads, both left and right that comes to a violent clash, some good music of all sorts.

Honestly, if its showing in a cinema near you, go and check it out.

Just watched the trailer. Looks like it could be a good one. Will have to wait for the DVD to come out though as this film won’t be shown around these shores.

I went to see it last week and I thought it was excellent, but I was very disappointed that it was an 18 cert, especially as it was written and produced with a target audience of 12-16 year olds! It’s censorship gone mad! The racist abuse and the violence (which you only THINK you’ve seen anyway) are absolutely fundamental to the story and because of the rating the only people who won’t get to see it are the people that Meadows wrote it for

It’s a really touching film, but some people will find it childish and simplistic - there’s no political commentary at all. And people who remember 1983 will be both impressed and horribly embarrassed by the attention to period detail.

If anything all these little bebo knackers in my area should watch this.

Great film and when out on DVD will definitely be on my shelf next to genre classics as The Firm and Scum.

Well said, Mrs H.

It is believed that Bristol overturned the 18 certificate to allow 15 year olds to see it. The violence is nothing new, kids would’ve seen it day in and day out. Had someone like Alan Clark, Stanley Kubrick or even Danny Boyle made the film, perhaps politics might have played a part.

What I liked about the film was that it showed that skinheads were not always political and did not hate other races (Milky, proving the point). But the film dealt with the National Front issue really well; it doesn’t hide the matter that most skinheads of that time were racist apart from the odd hand full.

And too right, I’m getting the DVD.

Shane Meadows is a fucking genius , I like almost all his movies so far.

Never do that!! I would have had to dust off my docs and spike my hair and we would have been forced by tragic circumstances to kick the living sh1t out of each other :p

We could direct our walking racks to the pub afterwards and discuss the merits of the early 80s over a game of checkers and a nice brandy.

Ahhhh, this reminds me of the golden age of youth violence:

“England”

The red in the flag
is the blood that was spilt
in the way that your forefathers tell
And never a country been so great
The stories Britannia could tell

I never want to live my life
away from the golden shores
There’s never a country in the world
with the scent of an English rose

England, oh England a country so great
the land of so fair and so true
There’ll never be any colours like
the red, the white and the blue

Whenever you go to the far-off shores
there’s something that goes with you
The pride and the joy and the love
that comes from your mother of red, white and blue

You could never be born under a flag
that’s like the one of the Union Jack
St. George’s spirit has never died
It all keeps coming back

England, oh England… [5x]

But back in the day skinheads were the enemy. Except the few that I knew, who were lovely. I say lovely - I only knew one and he ended up doing 7 years for armed robbery so he can’t have been that lovely after all :(

The white laces are because these are my wedding docs. That’s why there is lace round the top and a picture of a kitten in a wineglass on the side :)

My wife had white docs for our wedding. Not for the ceremony itself - she bowed to convention and did the girly thing for that - but for the reception on the evening she had a white trouser suit and white docs - She insisted she had to have some of her “ladette” side creeping into things!

i saw it a couple of weeks ago in cambridge. it was a very very good film in the kind of “gritty” real films which are so often passed by.

it was strange, as i left the cinema i was thinking “well, that film was fucking ace” but not like a joyous feeling. it’s one of those films like requiem for a dream which are great but you kind of feel a bit wrong about having enjoyed.

cathartic is the word i’m looking for.
