Please take a look at http://www.limitedaddiction.jesussaveus.com and follow the “urgent plea” link on the homepage.

It’s a report on the new Licensing Bill proposals which could seriously affect all live music in the UK. Thanks for your time :D

Only just got round to reading this.
For a start I wish these fucking politicians would talk NORMALLY ferchrissakes. What a waffly load of answers to some quite straightforward questions.

Anyways…I think I understood some of what he said.

Basically, am I right in thinking that licenced premises (pubs etc) will get a free entertainment licence?
I’m probably not right, which is why I can’t understand the outrage of you guys.
I must have missed something in my Politician to English translation.

I thought that this meant that any premisis (pubs & clubs etc) that want to have live bands preforming would need one of these license thingies. That would mean, if in fact I am correct and very probably not that small venues will be unable to afford or put off by this. I enjoy going down to one of my local pubs to see new and upcomming bands, but if I’m right and this legistation is passed then that’ll fuck that up I suppose… :(

I think that his how I read it. Would this mean that the local pub would have to fork out for a license to have a local band play there?

Pubs round where I live (Worcestershire) keep saying to me that one of the reasons they don’t have live bands is because they have to have a licence which costs money. So we already have this. Unless it’s just this county, or the local town councils. Redditch, Bromsgrove, Droitwich, Worcester and so on.

Not sure what the score is here in Merseyside, but you wonder why we get flooded with so much American music.
Ireland was fantastic when I was there, jsut to have an acoustic night where anyone can join was brilliant.

Ireland’s good for the trad music alright, but it’s impossible to get a gig if you’re playing contemporary rock/metal. You have to go to the cities for that.

Here in my town, which is pretty big (roughtly 25,000 people), we can’t get a gig anywhere. You won’t take us unless we play acoustic, or play the usual covers set (Zeppelin, Stones, Chilli’s etc…), so it’s a pain in the arse that way.

Shit that, I really sympathise with you. We spent a a week in Dublin, then went further down South to Dungarven, and it was lovely down there, but the pace of life compared to Dublin was unbelievable. I’d love to watch T? in Ireland, I would also love to watch Shane MacGowan in Ireland, I bet that would be something else, I watched the Pogues with Shane in Manchester last Christmas, and it was fantastic, I have never witnessed so many pissed people under one roof.
Shane seems to play the odd gig, but it always seems to be in London, as do other bands playing a DJ set!! bar-stewards, I have got a garage, come and play at mine, I’ll shift the car.

This bill will mean that ANY venue, not just pubs and clubs (ie. Church, community centre etc) will have to have a licence for live music of any kind.

The licence will cost between £100 and £3000, meaning that many places will either stop providing live music or be forced to charge more to cover costs. Either way it’s NOT GOOD!

This money won’t be going back to benefit live music in any way, it will just be lining the pockets of the local government.

All the info you need to contact you local MP is at the link I posted before :D

Not wanting to sound too cynical Hooch, but I doubt local MPs are gonna be too interested in changing things. The labour ones will have to toe the party line, and the Tories, well they’re just a bunch of c**ts. The Lib Dems might be up for it though…

Heh heh, just watched Charles Kennedy presenting Have I Got News For You so I think you’re right.

I didn’t bother contacting my local MP, since I live in the middle of nowhere, don’t have a music venue to defend and he’s a Tory but I wrote to my old one (Fab Fabian) in Leeds under the guise of someone who still lives there, as that’s where I’d go to a gig anyway.

Besides, not doing anything is like not voting on Fame Academy and then moaning when David wins (Go Sinead!) See ya after the results ;)

Your allusions to Fame Academy are lost on me, as I deliberately avoided it. I even chided my own mother for being an avid fan… ;)

Gutted. My deepest sympathies to your mother, presuming she had the good sense to vote for Sinead.

I do watch an awful lot of trash tv. I think it’s a symptom of being so far removed from any signs of real life (the closest thing being the local Age Concern).
