Addressing people who are “Sir”

#

Started by Sabotage

I don’t know about you guys, but if in the extremely unlikely event I met anyone called Sir Whatsisface, and I had to speak with them for whatever reason, I wouldn’t use the “Sir” bit. I’d just call them Mr. Whatsisface. I just couldn’t bring myself to call them Sir Richard or whatever.
Would any of you use the Sir bit?
Are you supposed to?

Just been watching the news and Cliff Richard is on and people are calling him Sir and stuff, and it just racks me off.

I must agree with ya. I dislike that stuff as well. If the Queen were to approach me this very second I wouldn’t bow down to her. Also this leads onto the national anthem. I thought national anthems were written to praise ones country and the people in it, not one human being who prances around with a crown on their head. You can never get rid of the class system though. Me dad has a saying-‘We’re all equals, but some are more equals than others.’

I agree - all that “Sir” stuff is nonsense.

I mean, Sir Alex Ferguson!!! Come on!

He’s nothing but a bollox who’s spent shareholders money to get where he is. I don’t rate him as a football manager, let alone as someone to grovel for.

your dad’s read Animal Farm then crash. I just call people by their names unless its a teacher then I say sir or miss, but thats different. I wouldn’t call a “Sir” Sir whatever, I’d just call them by their name

Too right. I’d never call anyone “Sir”. At least we’re all a bunch of non-deferential free-thinking people. Which is cool.

That’s the same thing in Dutch, in the Dutch language you in the polite way is” U” and you as you would say to friends is” Jij” well, I call everybody ” JIJ” because I think “u” creates distance between people!

Erm…I just said that I don’t agree with it White Pchycho. Me dad doesn’t necessarily agree with the class system, he just said that because thats what happens in our society. Sure its a misunderstanding

Odd. I actually had a dream like that the other night. I dreamt i had to pick Elton John up from somewhere and take him to a party, and i wasn’t sure if i should be calling him ‘Sir Elton’ or what. Fortunately, in real life i don’t run into titled people very often, but i don’t think i would mind calling them ‘Sir’, or whatever. I mean, it’s not really that much different from something like ‘Dr’.

And as Randle said, “I’m a strong believer in the ruling class. Especially since i rule.”

A class-less society would be great, but it would never work, unfortunately.

The thing your dad says is a quote from Animal Farm, that’s all WP was saying I think :D

Personally, like Kyra I generally say Sir or Madam to older people - force of habit - probably a result of far too much shop work in my youth. Still, I firmly believe that manners don’t cost anything and it’s not difficult to be polite.

nice one hooch, you’re definitely right. so why many people we encounter are very rude to us remains a mistery to me. in the last week i’ve been told off at the airport, on the bus and at the supermarket for no reason at all. all of this because one is polite, shows respect and knows when to keep silent. i assume most ppl just enjoy being bossy

If I don’t know their name I usually call people “mate” to be honest.
It doesn’t really crop up. Although I do slip the odd “love” in there when I’m talking to older ladies (bit sickly that I suppose, but it’s force of habit). You pick these things up aoff your parents.
Tricky one if you don’t know the person.
Mate is a bit too familiar you could argue. But I like to think that they’re a mate I don’t know very well yet.

OK then. So you go up to someone you don’t know, and they are not famous, and they’re around your age. They’ve dropped something on the floor (or whatever) and you pick it up and give it them back saying something like “Excuse me mate. You dropped this.”
They go “It’s not mate. I’m a Sir.” with a dead arsy look on their face.

I would nod, mumble something like “yeah…whatever” any walk off with the item. Placing it gently down somewhere. Like a cliff.
