Lost Songs

Started by Dr. Bigjoint

What song were recorded by T?, but weren’t released on albums, singles and compilations.
There’s a list at http://www.suicidepact.com, but i suppose they recorded more songs than listed there.
I know there’s an instrumental “Valentine’s day”, which was recorded during the Shameless session (according to Jack Endino).
Probably you know something else. Or even have recordings ;)

Well, I suppose you could mention “Reality” recorded in 1990 for the Dave Fanning Session. This was a very early version of Die Laughing.

Don’t forget “Pile Of Bricks” from the 1993 John Peel Session. Sascha, you know how much we’ve both been looking for that one! :-)

I remember one of fan-club letters (remember them?) in 1995 mentioned an untitled song that they were thinking of putting on the “Diane” single as an acoustic b-side, but they obviously went with acoustic songs from Troublegum and Infernal Love. But it means there is an original finished acoustic song that has never appeared on anything.

Jan, I don’t think someone from the board has this song. I know guys who have the recording, but they don’t want to trade for some reasons.

Sascha, remember a while ago I mentioned a track called “The Sweeney”?

Well, I found out what this is - it was a new song played in April/May 1996 (it turns out I’ve actually seen this live ‘cos I was at the Dublin gig then)

A part of the song (about 30 seconds) was recorded at the Newport, Wales gig and shown on Dutch TV right before the Pinkpop ‘96 broadcast. I have this on video but never knew what it was.

The chorus of the song is repeated “This is my world baby, this is my fucking world!”. The song sounds very heavy, and I’d love to find a full version. Apparently, BBC radio recorded a gig in America in 1996 and broadcast some songs, incluing “The Sweeney”

I know some people have this recording but I think they’re gone from this board long ago…

Here’s a small spoiler about the upcoming website (which is really coming sooner than later), ‘The Sweeney’ (from the BBC Radio 1 Evening Sessions) will be one of the downloadable tracks in the new sound clip section!

I’m sorry for getting back in this thread this late!

Alan - no, actually the lyrics you’ve mentioned are not in the song that I have that is supposed to be ‘The Sweeney’, and I’m quite sure it is. So I’m guessing you mean another song..?

Ronald - It’s getting better, slowly but surely. Thanks!

dano - ‘Lost Highway’ will also be on the new site.. But that’s the last song I’m revealing that will be available for download on the new site ;-)

Dr. Bigjoint - ‘They’ (being me :-)) will put the songs online on the new site, which is getting closer and closer to being finished. I’m hoping to announce a definite launch date soon, depending on my recovery.

D’oh! I guess I’ll never know now what that song is (unless of course they changed the lyrics?) Hmm, I guess I’ll just wait and see.

Looking forward to it!

I remember there was a recording of Gimme Therapy from Session North Ireland at this site in mp3-format. What version it was? A studio version or a live-in-studio-version?

With reference to the lyrics for The Sweeney and Alan’s version not being the same as Rene’s…

Is it possible that The Sweeney is the same as “New Song in D” as played at the fan club gigs beginning 1996? I can’t quite rememeber how I made that link, and it may be wrong. But if correct that would attribute two sets of lyrics to this song:

“This is my world, [baby], this is my fucking world”
and
“I’m gonna kill your mother, I’m gonna kill your father, and blame it on you”.

This song may also have been announced as “I Like Cock”, but maybe not.

Ahem.

Ahem, indeed :-)

Yeah, “New Song In D” and “New Song 2” were both played at those fan-club gigs and early USA tour gigs.

I have a bootleg of the Kansas gig, and “New Song 2” is an early version of “Black Eye Purple Sky”.

“New Song In D” definately has the lyrics ‘this is my fucking world’, and by all accounts has the lyrics ‘gonna kill your mother, kill your father’

I always thought that this song ended up as “The Sweeney”. My guess is they’re the same song, but the lyrics changed a lot.

But that’s only a guess.

Alex,

Been to your site and noticed the new song that Michael announced as “I Like Cock” (a joke, one would think!?), at the 18/5/96 gig, is probably the “New Song 2” which turned out to be “Black Eye Purple Sky.”

I have a bootleg of Kansas 14/5/96 and they didn’t play “New Song In D”, but they did play “New Song 2”

So here’s what I think:
New Song In D = The Sweeney
New Song 2/I Like Cock = Black Eye Purple Sky

Damn these 2 songs for causing so much grief. Can’t wait to hear Rene’s version of The Sweeney - just to put my mind to rest, if nothing else!!

I asked Michael and Andy about the lyrics “This is my world, this is my fucking world” and this is what Andy told me about it:

“as regards the ‘this is my world..’ this was indeed an early musical version of joey but the lyrics were completely different and there was some cello on it.

it was played as long ago as 1996, in fact when we played it on tour in Seattle in 1996 at the Crocodile Cafe(owned by peter buck from r.e.m.’s wife) peter buck himself who was in the audience claimed that it was his favourite song in the set! something to do with the opening lyrics which originally went..”i want to fuck my mum, i want to fuck my dad”!

a big thank you again to all the therapy? fans who have been putting smiles on our faces all week. keep up the good work, you’re the best.”

So, there you have it, it’s an early version of Joey!

Glen Miller “There is a demo of it somewhere from the Infernal Love sessions. It’s pretty shite if truth be told. It was just a poppy riff and chorus I was messing about with and the producer, Al Clay, liked it, so we recorded a version of it with the band. It doesn’t really sound like Therapy? and the chorus goes something like, “this is the loneliest place in the world”. It’s actually a bit m.o.r.! I haven’t got a version of it myself and if you ever see it, unless you collect absolutely everything, I would suggest giving it a wide berth. It truly is awful.”—Andy Cairns

Does no-one read my website?
