Anyone else find slayer hilarious and a complete novelty act ? Pretending to be satanic to ensure mass album sales ? :D

Yeah, I laugh about it all the time.

Just this morning, I mentioned it to the old lady in the Spar shop and she said she thought the satanic element was quite hip and trendy. I laughed.

*The above may not have happened.

But putting “satanic” and “mass” in the same sentence (without linking the two meanings) was quite novel, Squall!

oh, the fun! :)

meh slayer, all their songs sound the same, their catholics so the ‘god hates us all’ thing dont cut it, though dave lombardo is an awesome drummer (check out fantomas)

To be perfectly honest, I’m not really a Slayer fan. The only album I have is “Reign in Blood” and I got that cheap recently.

I just remember seeing them at a festival a while back and been blown away by Lombardo’s drumming. I wanna go check him out again and get some tips! Plus Mastodon’s drummer is superb too. Should be a bit of a laugh hopefully.

Yeah! the satanic shite is a bit much. But so what.
They are an excellent band to see live.

I’m really looking forward to the Marquee gig tomorrow night. Haven’t seen MASTODON before. So that should be class.

And CARNUN RISING are the opening act. I have their album and have seen them a couple of times. One of Corks best metal bands. Only problem is they are on stage pretty much straight away.
Doors at 7:00… CARNUN on stage at 7:01…

I’m kinda bored with their hardcore stuff. Time for them to change it up a bit.

Even if their older albums had similar subject matter, they at least all had their own sound.

The last 3-4 CDs kind of blur together to me.

Exactly - at least metallica try to make each album individual.

Load / Reload being the exception since it was originally conceived as a double album.

It’s the bands who put out the same album every 2 years that will never be huge.

Slayer do have some amazing riffs and Lombardo can certainly play, but they do nothing for me.

I can go months without listening to Slayer and then have a mad week of nothing else.

I really have to be in the mood for it - If the mood takes me it is the perfect music to listen to, the rest of the time it just sounds like ridiculous noise with shite lyrics!

As for the Satanic side of things, the band are not all catholics, as one person suggested.

Tom Araya is a believer in God, in a broadly Catholic manner, whereas Kerry King (who is responsible for the majority of the satanic lyrics) neither believes in God nor the Devil - he uses the lyrics purely to get a reaction and cos, presumably, it’s hard to write lyrics about anything else that will actually fit that style of music, apart from war, which they also write about a lot.

Even a magazine article I read recently that praised the band to the hilt conceded that the lyrics were always the weakest link in the Slayer chain.

How should I put this..I listened to Slayer when I was like 15 years old or was I 13-14..nevermind. Seasons In The Abyss, Reign In Blood (trash metal classic still! ), South Of Heaven are great albums but I don’t find the newer albums any better (only exceptions are Divine Intervention with few good songs and the cover album) . They are marketing their music under Satan’s thumb (because of Kerry King, I dunno) and that’s ridiculous ‘cos everyone knows of what do Araya believes.

But the same question goes for me: do I like Cannibal Corpse anymore? :D (Hammer Smashed Face is still a classic! )

Think that’s a bit harsh - saw Aerosmith at Hyde Park and they were the most lively band on during the whole day. Just because some of the older guard are feeling their age it doesn’t mean to say that all of them have to stop.

Just imagine seeing some of them trying to take a slower pace to their sets - yeah I can just see Kerry King doing Angel of Death whilst in his rocking chair or Steve Tyler sitting in his Ronnie Corbett style easy chair sing Love in an Elevator - NOT! These blokes should only stop when they die - my opinion.

So Slayer don’t disappear too quickly - there are too many emo bands that have to pay the price first!!

Every successful band has an image. Slayer’s happens to be Satanic shit. Doesn’t mean they are actually satanists, hell in interviews they’re real nice.

If they’re really satanic band…I’m going to die laughing. =) Even Immortal is more satanic than they. =)

I liked Slayer in that film they did way back - Slayer In Flames - where they are all wearing flares and singing about being All Crazee Now or summat. This was before Jeff Hanneman had his front teeth fixed, god you should see how sticy-out they are in that film. I swear, you’d hardly recognise the band…
