Brian Clough

Following on from Andy quoting Brian Clough, and given that I shed a tear along with the rest of Nottingham last night whilst watching the evening news, here’s a few more quotes, taken from tonight’s tribute in the Nottingham Evening Post:

“At last England have appointed a manager who speaks English better than the players” — On the appointment of Sven-Goran Eriksson

“Manchester United in Brazil? I hope they all get bloody diarrhoea” — On Manchester United’s decision to opt out of the FA Cup to play in the World Club Championship in 2000.

“I can’t even spell spaghetti never mind talk Italian. How could I tell an Italian to get the ball? He might grab mine” — On the influx of foreign players.

“I like my women to be feminine, not sliding into tackles and covered in mud” — On women and football.

“Who the hell wants 14 pairs of shoes when you go on holiday? I haven’t had 14 pairs in my life” — on the contents of Victoria Beckham’s missing luggage.

“I wouldn’t say I was the best manager in the business. But I was in the top one” — on his own success.

“Andybody who can do anything in Leicester but make a jumper has got to be a genius” — His tribute to Martin O’Neill’s time at LCFC.

In May ‘93, when hundreds lined outside the Council House to watch him become the 31st Freeman of Nottingham, pride was written all over his face. At the time he spoke of his love for the city:

“And I love the River Trent, too,” he added. “Well I ought to. I’ve walked on it for 18 years.”.

It’s a shame he’s gone, he truly was one of the great characters, I’ll never forget the images on the news of him slapping those pitch invaders!

Yep its a shame alright . Isn’t there a new book out on him by a reporter who was based in Nottingham for years. Heard an interview with him promoting the book on Irish radio. He gave Nottingham a poor review after a match and Clough banned him from the ground which was tough as that was that main part of his job. He dared do along to the next game. Tha day after Clough rang him up and asked why he wasn’t at the game, all was forgiven.

A sad end for the man, booze really crippled him.

Yes mate, I’m sure it does *backs away*

Seriously though, the way you answered this thread it was as if you thought Brian Clough had died yesterday…

Reminds me of when my brother was about ten, and someone said something about Marilyn Monroe being dead (I think it was when Princess Di died, and they were playing Candle In The Wind). he was outraged: ‘What??! Marilyn Monroe dead?! When did this happen? nobody told me!’
