Bearded Dragon

#

Started by chr1s (The T.F.M)

I’m getting a Bearded Dragon as a pet. I’ve never kept anything like it before, but i’ve read up on them and they don’t seem to be too difficult to keep…in theory.

Does anybody on here have 1 or does anybody know someone who has?

My only advice is on a friday night/early saturday morning in the town square outside the pub never ask a bearded dragon what gender they are

Sounds like a Proggy/Stoner-rock band!

“Bearded Dragon will be signing copies of their new album Autumnsoft Summer Pagan Ritual in HMV in Exeter next Friday” kinda thing…

Anybody wanna help me name it? I was thinking of calling it Gemil, cos it’s got a kinda triangular shaped head, but not sure.

They just get their roadies to do the signing session and take the money from HMV whilst they stay in the studio getting even more stoneder and working on the flute break for their latest, as yet untitled, 27-minute epic.

I really should get out more and meet real people, not just the ones in my head :(

As for the animals themselves, whatever they are, I reckon Google should turn up enough information to get you started, Chr1s.

In the meantime, tell us what you DO know about them, cos I have no idea what one is - sounds cool though..?

It’s a lizard thingy. You need to feed them live locusts that you have pre covered in calcium powder, and the odd mealworm as a snack. They will also eat most other fruit and vegetables, as long as you chop them up enough. I asked about them in the pet shop and the guy was quite good. He said they’re really sociable and like to be handled and let out as much as possible. And they don’t have teeth, so it’s safe for kids to handle them too. No bitten fingers. I just wondered if anybody had any experience with them. You know what it’s like. You think “yeah, that sounds easy enough, and shouldn’t take too much effort”, and then, when you actually need to do it, it becomes a pain in the arse.

I looked into getting a chameleon but was put off. Aparently they can be quite nervous and get stressed quite easily, and if you have a male and he doesnt get his ‘rocks off’ twice a year they die so you have to take them to mate… (probably involves going to a bar on a friday and getting a lady chameleon really drunk)

But the bearded dragon seems to be a bit easier from what you said… they are quite similar looking though.

Best thing to do is read as much as you can on the net - some petshops will tell you some right shit just to get a sale

It was a chameleon i was originally looking at, but, as you said, their a bit more awkward to look after. And they don’t like to be handled either.

The pet shop that i’ve been asking is quite good. I used to keep tropical fish and got all my gear and info in there and i alway’s found the guy to be honest.

If a chameleon went out on the pull he would have to wear a bright shirt so he didn’t blend into the background and the laydeez could see him.

@Chr1s - If you have the patience to manage a tropical fish tank then I’m sure this won’t be too much hassle but I don’t like the idea of getting it from a pet shop… can’t you find a rescue centre or something?

I got 1!!! It’s about 1 1/2 yrs old and pretty much fully grown. I got it from a guy who has just started a new job which involves him being away from home for 5 days at a time, and can’t look after it as much as it needs any more. He had left a card in the pet shop looking for a good home for it and he brought it round at the weekend. He’s going to keep in touch to see how i’m getting on with it and i can fone him if i have any problems. It doesn’t seem too difficult to look after. I just need to make sure that i have a supply of live food for it and that the temperature in the vivarium is warm enough at the hot end and cool enough at the cool end (thats where it seems to sleep). It loves being handled and will spend loads of time just sitting on your shoulder or climbing about you.

@ mr self distruct - it’s a she. Her name is Lizzy (how original). The guy let his 6yr old daughter name her.

@ mrs h - if you spill the calcium powder, you just wash it off!!! And hoover up whatever got on the floor.

That’s ok then. I thought maybe it might confuse you with 10 little locusts and strip all the skin off your fingers like that obese freak in ‘Consider Phlebus’.

My nearly 6 year old granddaughter (a keen swimmer) has said that if and when she has a daughter she is going to name her Chlorine. You should change Lizzy’s name to something more original. You may call her Mrs H if you like, it’s a fine name :)
