I would possibly buy one as i do like them… but i’m pretty happy with my Les Paul, and i don’t see me shelling out for another guitar for a while.

Yes its The Ibanez Arc 300 - I originally went in to buy the Double Cut away Trans Emerald finish but then i Spotted that beauty and luckily :

1.) It was £40 cheaper
2.) It’s better looking
3.) It sounds better

I am very happy with it. Especially since the floyd Rose bridge means i can tune micro tune but still drop d with the machine heads if i want :)
Say no to locked nuts !

All in all - very nice. First thing I did was put 11 guage strings on it. Might put some Les paul machine heads on eventually - the ” tulip ” style ones - as Im a sucker for those - And eventually some actual gibson les paul pickups :D

Noooo. I used to use 12’s, but they were a bit much. Plus I had to keep explaining to the idiot at the local guitar shop that I didn’t in fact want a set of strings for a twelve-string. Elevens are good.

James hetfield and Kirk hammett use 12 guage. So does Noel Gallagher :D probably the reason he doesnt solo much anymore !

Twangy is not good if it equals fretbuzz. I tthink my action needs to come up ever so slightly at the nut - which i have no idea how to do :(

I thought Hammett used really thin strings…? Shows what I know. I always put his weedy thin tone down to thin strings and down-tuning, but if he’s using 12’s then god only knows what he is doing wrong. (Sorry, don’t mean to bash the ‘tallica here, just Kirk’s tone in particular never appealed to me).

Maybe it is time for me to move up to 10’s and just put the hard work in getting my fingers used to it. It’s got to improve the tone, hasn’t it?

Squall - To raise the action on a floyd rose trem you need to dismantle it and ‘unscrew’ the support screws that are screwed into the body. Depending upon the type of Floyd rose you can usually do this with a flat head screwdriver, or an Alan Key.

To be honest, it’s best left to a pro - I’ve lst hours of my life trying to setup a floyd rose

Are you sure about that, Squall? As far as I know they have both always used 10’s.

I use 10’s or 11’s myself, as I tended to break the 9 gauge string quite quickly when I tried them - might have been my playing style though :-)

On the one and only time I ever recorded in a studio, I was told I was a very light player, so maybe that’s why I get away with 9’s…?

I prefer that explanation better to the one were I come out looking like a lousy guitarist, Dennis, so yes, that must be it.

However, I just found out I do currently use 9’s, silly me. I must have been confused because of the fact that i haven’t played in ages! I use either .009-.042 or .010-.046 size strings.

I always thought you used heavier gauge strings if you tuned down? I remember asking for gauge 9’s once for my guitar, the guy in the music shop was laughing at me - Twat!

Squall, if you can remove the nut when the strings are off, then you can actually just raise it up slightly with something underneath. Can literally be something like a thin sliver of wood, or even card (careful it doesn’t fuck up the tone, though).

The other way is to put something like epoxy resin into the slots that you want to raise, and then file them back down to the right shape.

Or you could just pay someone else to do it. :)

(I’ve got a guitar setup book somehwere, so I’ll check later to see if it suggests anything else. Like ‘for the love of god, don’t put epoxy resin in the slots!’ ;))

Squall is this your new guitar you are talking about? If so I would get a professional to set it up before you do anything else - it may need the truss rod adjusting

Plus I have set intonation before. Trus Rod ? no - id take that to a pro for sure. But I dont think its that. All the guitars are set up before they go on sale.

Those sorts of setups are just a quick spit and polish, though. You really can’t rely on them to do a good job for you. Particularly if you’re changing the strings from 9s to 11s!
Dennis is right, it could be the trussrod. I fixed a problem on my bass with frets buzzing up close to the nut by adjusting mine.

Jazz guitar players seem to use really heavy strings, don’t really know why? Mine are heavy because i do currently play down in C sharp/drop B but that’s more to do with helping singers hit there notes batter but i have got used to it now :)
