apparently js clayden from pitchshifter and even henry rollins are mad about him. i’ve recently met a guy who too thinks bill hicks was a genius. try as i might, i could never get into his stuff cos the mere thought he’s dead (of such a terrible death and pretty young too) makes it so frustrating to me as it never did before as far as other dead comedians were concerned

Funny guy, even if he did hate everyone and everything around him!

Thought I would dig up this thread again… I just purchased his official back catalogue (7 cd albums) for $83 dollars, including shipping. Good deal :)

Try http://www.rykodisc.com

There’s also a new DVD (actually his first “official”, record label dvd) called “Live”. It features the Dominion performance and tribute (from “Totally”), the One Night Stand perfomance, plus the “Relentless” performance from the Montreal festival. This DVD is definately worth getting, if you have no other Hicks material.

I got this at weekend off playusa.com and am watching through it - very funny!

Oh - you can pretty much find all the albums online - they are worth downloading!

I have no guilt about not buying these - its not like he needs the money!

I’m another certified Bill Hicks devotee. I’ve got all his discs. Most of the material is still pretty relevent, and if some of the topics are a little dated, it doesn’t matter, cos it’s so funny!

Bill hicks rules, hes a very very funny man and on some of his live cd’s it’s great when he just loses it at the crowd. The book about him and the one of the scripts to his live shows are great. Also Tool are big fans and have samples and dedications to him in on one of there cd’s.

I’ve read books about him and seen documentrys, and he’s had an interesting life and never bowed down to censorship which i respect. I personally find him very funny and have quite a few of his cd’s and dvds. His views could be quite extreme but because he never changed them and stuck with what he thought was right then i don’t think he was full of shit just sometimes blinkered.

I’d go with that, it’s just that many of Hicks fans just agree with him about absolutely everything and repeat his arguments parrot fashion to avoid having to think for themselves. “advertising? sucking satans cock mate, like Bill Hicks said…” yada yada. How is stealing the opinions of others thinking for yourself?

Hicks was obviously extreme but i always got the impression that was to make a point, the harsher you put it the more people pay attention, even if this means getting very angry

:D A mate of mine once tried to explain why he liked the film ” Trainspotting ” and he quoted a review of it to me as his own opinion.

He is one of those people that if the press say something is good - then it MUST be.

When he was on top form, he was funny as fuck but RIGHT at the same time - as the best observational comedy is.

Sometimes, though, he just descended into cock jokes that went on far too long and weren’t nearly as funny or shocking as he thought.

Sound guy though. Mr Hicks - RIP

Nah, i’m with Buffalo on this, the man was fucking incredible. Ok, some of his views were a little, erm, narrow minded, but overall he was a fantastic performer, the likes of which we’ll never see again.
Anyone seen Denis Leary? Now, although he rips off a few Hicks routines i’m a big fan. “No cure for cancer” is a must.

Anyone else find him terribly over-rated ?

I’ve heard a lot of his stuff and I dont really see what all the fuss is about.

There are way funnier comedians.

 Oooh, he was pro-smoking and paid the ultimate price. He spoke his mind etc etc

:o Wasn’t actually very funny though.
