I know what your saying with Dime - I mean - who gave a fuck about Damageplan?
But his riffs / solos / sounds with Pantera are pretty much the dogs bollocks…

Brian May - Fucking genius.
Not only built his own guitar, but also created his own sound. The undisputed Master of guitar harmonies.
Other greats would have to be Eddie van Halen, Nuno Bettencourt, Marty Friedman, Dimebag Darrell, Randy Rhodes…
The list goes on and on…

Brian May also does Queen covers with boybands, where does he find the time?

Patrick Moore does all the housework for him so he’s got plenty of time to dash off to Mars or record songs with boybands

Brian May is a God end of story.
I also found his venture with five somewhat frightening, but you know what, he could shit on his legacy for the rest of his life and still not undo it.
As for the guy from PL, sorry Kill Hill, but what has he contributed that is so different? Saw them warming up for Opeth and I must sadly say that they were a very average band.
As music is matter of taste however…

I think he comes close to and surpasses many of the names on this thread. They are a highly influencial band, they have influenced Opeth for one, god only knows how big they would have been if they were american. His guitar leads are amazing in my view and what i also like about him is that he underplayed his technicall abbility for many albums. The Embers Fire solo is the job, a highly orignal piece of work. Many of the guitarists mentioned can shred etc like theres know tomorrow but Mackintosh brings something different to the table, he taps into something else in my view, he can do epic like know one else i have heard and the line between epic and cheese is a fine line, one which i think he has never crossed.
The man is a gent but if he doesn’t do it for you fair enough.

Fair point, can see where you are coming from.
Is all about taste. I also don’t rate a guitarist plainly on technique (you won’t catch me claiming that Vai or Satriani are the best) - feeling is also important, which is something I will strongly agree that the PL fella has. I am just not blown away by his technique.
Oh yeah, think I forgot to mention Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman earlier, anyone who has heard Hangar 18 (or even seen it live with both of them) would agree…

Well said Kill_Hill…I would also mention that Greg has looked consistently cool when playing live, and important trait when judging any rock guitarist :)
KJC Dublin, you’re right that it is down to taste, I would rather listen to a single Greg lead for the rest of my life than the entire catalogue of a Brian May or a Mark Knopfler, for example… Maybe you don’t feel his playing but plenty of people do (and it’s good to see a few have popped up in this thread).

ah ya the Mackintosh hair flick is something to behold alright :-). For me he just packs emotion and feeling into everythimg he does. He isn’t the greatest technical guitarist of all time nor has he ever claimed to be, he does how ever have a style that sounds like no one else.
If you haven’t listened to a PL album in a while KJC then now may be the time to revisit the magic ;-)
