Personal Statement

#

Started by Viirkokka

I’ve been writing my Personal Statement over the last week as it’s due tomorrow. I wrote up all 4000 characters and it was shaping up nicely. I plan on pursuing a career in Journalism or being a critic. I handed it to my Media teacher and he found many faults with it.. especially that I don’t have much extra-curricular stuff relating to journalism other than me writing for http://www.helium.com.

It’s due tomorrow according to my Personal Tutor (Even though none of my mates are handing theres in yet since their Tutors arent asking for them.. just mine is asking for them earlier than the others’ are.. god knows why.. but she wants them at the same deadline as the people handing in applications to Oxford or Cambridge medicine… no idea why! (She’s an oddball))

I need time to get expereince as a journalist! Writing for online competitions and signing up to the College Radio and News Paper (My own fault I didnt sign up to these last year.. stupid of me!) and I need atleast a week after half term to do it.

So yeah that’s my situation at the moment.

Please can anyone share some stuff about their issues with Personal Statements? Or even what you did to make yours really stand out (Something mines lacking a little at the moment) :D :)

Go round small, local newspapers asking if you can do a column for them. Some will say yes. I was offered to do a column for the Irish News last year, something I kindly declined as I had too much shit going on.
If you can do work experience / work shadowing - try to get placement in a local radio station or newspaper / magazine place. You might get lucky.

As for journalism, good idea, strongly considering that career path myself! ;)

Thanks for the advice I’ve been meaning to e-mail local papers to ask for a little bit of work experience but A) I dont get round to it and B) (Admitting this unwillingly) I’m a bit lazy :D

To try and pack in as much as I can, tonight I’ve also created a blog and I’m gonna stuff it full of my opinions and views on news stories and then write the link to it on my Personal Statement. Hopefully that’ll show me as being a good writer and able to analyse text as well as being clued up with the Media.

And if you can get that all done by tomorrow, it’ll show you can work to a tight deadline. ;) Good luck!

Also, let a friend / someone good at English to ensure grammar, punctuation etc is correct!

If you need someone “good at English” to check your writing for grammar and punctuation errors then you ain’t going to make much of a journalist!

Thanks for the advice guys.. last night I managed to write two articles on http://www.helium.com and e-mail two local papers (the only two adresses I had at hand..) Today I opened my inbox and found.. a reply from one of the editors!

He has invited me to a work experience interview next Thursday and it’ll take an hour by bus. I’m quite excited but at the same time apprehensive as I don’t want to just be doing work there and photocopying stuff! I want to be writing a column on local music or video games or movies and the such. Plus, if I were to be writing a column, it is much easier to fit in with my college work as I already have a job.

btw helium.com is a website where you can write articles and get paid (smalllllll amounts) for every certain amount of pages views. your articles are rated so higher rating = more page views. Here’s a few of my better ranking ones;
http://www.helium.com/tm/312838/appeal-defined-ability-excite - What gives a person sex appeal
http://www.helium.com/tm/237579/powerpoint-great-diverse-program - How to improve PowerPoint presentations
http://www.helium.com/tm/235741/becoming-acquainted-someone-gradually - Best gifts for new friends

Regretfully, some of my writing on Helium.com is quite cheesy (and strangely it’s often the higher ranked stuff!). I think it’s because people like feel-good information to read!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get about a cent for every 3 or 4 people that click them! Haha it’s a teensy amount.. I think I have earnt $4.69 so far! You need to get to $25 before you can even withdraw it. It’s not worth doing for money unless you want to write absoloutely loooads of great quality work…
