Please help me choose what Therapy album I should get next?

Let me just say first off that I am not what you would call a “Therapy fan”. I saw them at Donnington 95 and at the same time a friend of mine kept playing Troublegum in my house to the point where I had to go and buy a copy for myself because I loved it so much. To this day it remains one of my favourite albums, a classic in my collection. However, due to the size of my music collection and the time I spend listening to other bands, I made a conscious decision to not investigate any other material by Therapy, my reason being that if the other stuff was different or not as good it might tarnish my view of the band. I know to some that may sound insane, but it makes sense to me…

Anyways, I had a listen to Troublegum the other day, it’s always a good tension reliever, and I decided I would like to find some other material finally, hence the discovery of this website and forum. Based on the fact that I love the aforementioned Troublegum, and based on the fact that a lot of you people are familiar with how the sound of the band may (or may not) have evolved over the past 10-15 years, could you please suggest another album or two for me to start off with? I would like something as good and as similar sounding as Troublegum, IF such a thing exists. I was thinking Infernal Love because it was the followup, but I see that a couple others get higher ratings from other members here, after reading the ratings thread. Thanks in advance.

When looking at their back catalogue, my favourite album is Nurse, because it just shows what unique band Therapy? are as far as sound and song writing goes (recording quality is crap btw).

High Anxiety is the album that I would rank most similar to Troublegum, this is however merely due to the pop type elements in the song - musically it is a different story.

Never Apologize, Never Explain - a really heavy noisy album with less pop elements - I love it!

Suicide Pact, you first - wouldn’t recommend this because it is an extremely experimental album which requires a lot of listens to appreciate properly. totaly anti-comercial (lost the band loads of fans as well I imagine - loved amongst those who remain).

Baby Teeth / Pleasure Death: show early signs of the development of Therapy? sound and songwriting wise. Great Indie Metal albums.

Shameless: I find this album to be more Punk / Indie and less Metal sounding, my least favourite (many would disagree).

Semi-Detached: Very commercial sounding, overproduced and more poppy than Troublegum. Good album, but not mind blowing.

Infernal Love: Very dark album with lots of electronica added between the songs. A masterpiece, but not really like Troublegum (was the follow up album).

One Cure fits all: Most recent album - kept quite commercial with the usual Therapy? ingredients - I would reckon that you give this album a shot and work your way back from there.

Anyways, have ran out of time, but I hope that helps in some way - I am sure you will have loads of people saying the exact opposite.

Personally, I would recommend that you get So Much For Ten Year Plan next as it’s a kind of “best of”. There’s no other album by Therapy? like Troublegum (in my opinion) but if you want to get a “proper” album next, I would recommend Nurse personally. Hope this helps :)

In this day and age of the internet, if you are a genuine music lover, I don’t see the harm in downloading the odd song here and there to sample albums, just so long as you DO go and buy the albums you like. Anyone else agree…?

if you are into troublegum i would recommend high anxiety above any others. and possibly semi detached.

as a sidenote, i have just realised that i haven’t actually listened to T? for ages. i think i may have to fire some up over the weekend.

PLEASURE DEATH: Much better, closer to the T? live experience.

NURSE: Back to the industrial/post-punk territory, a pretty good album.

TROUBLEGUM: A stone-cold classic. ‘Nuff said.

INFERNAL LOVE: Unfairly-maligned collection of “love songs for the damned”. A great album. Japanese non-electronica version is better, though.

SEMI-DETACHED: My own favourite, and tragically underrated by even some WoMbles. The result of three years of rehab, line-up changes and so forth. Though slightly over-produced, the most considered Therapy? album.

SUICIDE PACT-YOU FIRST- Another classic. Not a bad song here (or any bar the next one on the list). Raw, disgusted, and packed wi’ ‘ooks The essence of Therapy?.

SHAMELESS- Next!

HIGH ANXIETY- Aye, a good old belter in the Troublegum vein. Watch You Go and If It Kills Me in particular.

NEVER APOLOGISE NEVER EXPLAIN- So raw it bleeds. Angry, pulsing, brilliant.

ONE CURE FITS ALL- The production benchmark for T? albums. Proof positive our boys still pack a wallop.

I just love the riffs, production, and some of the lyrics on Troublegum are so good, I love some of the almost apathetic quality of some of the delivery. I had a feeling that this album was a “one-off” which was why I was hesitant to pick up any of the other stuff. However, after reading all the responses I am definitely going to take some of the advice and check out some of the other albums suggested. I am also glad to see that I am not the only one who loves this album, it is indeed a masterpiece. Thanks again for the advice and I will report back (eventually!) with my findings.
