Learning Bass

#

Started by Viirkokka

I’m learning bass guitar for like.. the 5th time. Teaching myself. ‘cause the other 4 times didn’t last long and I didnt get far.

Anyway i’m just wondering if anyone knows an easy-ish song to learn? Therapy? or otherwise, but therapy? would be good since I have all their music.

Not looking for something *entirely* basic like :
Main Riff
G |————————————————|————————————————|
D |————————————————|————————————————|
A |-2—2—2—2—2—2—2—2—2—3—|-2—2—2—2—2—2—2—2—2—3—|
E |————————————————|————————————————|

but maybe something a step up from that?

I was trying to learn 30 seconds:
http://www.xguitar.com/bass-tabs/therapy/infernal_love/30_seconds.txt

but I have a bit of trouble figuring out when to play each note ‘cause sometimes theres a - spacing and somethings theres a —- and it’s difficult to correlate —- to an amount of time in real life :O

I chose 30 seconds ‘cause I have the acoustic version (When I tried die laughing I didnt have a clue when to play ‘cause couldnt hear the notes)

Any help would be awesome :)

Tabs alll well and good but its not like musical score - its just telling you what frets to hit in what order.

You gotta listen to the track and look at the tab at the same time and just go with what you hear. Try ripping the track to mp3.

There are a load of plug ins for media player or whatever that you can use to slow the speed of the track down - try playing it at 75% and getting the feeling right and then speeding it up.

There is a really, really handy program out there called Guitar Pro (i think the last one was guitar pro 5, but its a long time since I have used it)

It basically has the tab on screen, and you can either look at the bass, lead, rhythm or drum tab - you can also play a midi interpretation of the track (its not as bad as it sounds) to get the timing right - you can also mute each instrument so you can hear the part that you want.

They used to have the tab files up for download on http://www.mysongbook.com but due to legal twattery they havent been able to allow tabs for most artists for a while. I’m sure you can still get hold of the files from other sources though.

I know the guy that did most of the therapy? tabs on there posts on the board sometimes (DEDE73)

Its well worth looking out for Guitar Pro (i think you can probably get it from a torrent site with a crack - but I would never condone that kinda behaviour).

I dont think it costs the earth to buy either - they used to have a 30 day trial version on their site http://www.guitar-pro.com/en/index.php

So essentially you can listen to tracks with it,
and also compose music on it to play along with you?

damn tempting to buy it.. that guy you know (DEDE73) do you reckon he might still have the music files for Therapy? that he made?

I looked on the website and he indeed did loads of their songs!

Guitarpro is very handy when you want to see how each instrument plays in the song (if the tab is well made, of course), but it’s not the best software to compose…

About the groups to start with, think about U2 (Sunday bloody sunday, One… the bass lines are really elementary, you start learning that you must go along with the drums…) and yes, Nirvana and Pixies too.

Bye!

This site has loads of Guitar Pro files, as well as all the standard tab, too. You can set a filter to look for GP stuff.
The latest version of GP has a ‘real’ guitar/bass/drum sounds, if you have a moderately decent pc (it uses quite a bit of processor power). It’s quite impressive, especially compared with standard midi.

The other advantage with it is that, when someone makes a tab that’s slightly wrong, you can actually heaar that it’s wrong, rather than struggling to play it as written, and feeling like a failure. ;)

I’ll bet he’s still got the files.
