For some reason that made me think of black pudding. There is something I have never eaten and will never eat just because the thought of it is so foul. Same goes for whelks and jellied eels and all that sort of stuff.

I only have one leather jacket that will last years, but not eating animals makes much more of an impact as people eat meat on a daily basis. I agree that it’s a difficult position to defend but to be honest I don’t feel the need to defend it.

If people didn’t eat meat there’s no way it would be economically viable to grow cows just for leather, so Sam is only using by-products really. And i draw the line at sausages - my ex used to be a butcher’s apprentice and it’s just wrong to call that stuff meat. He actually became a veggie himself just because of having to make the sausages!

Fair enough. We’re obviously just poles apart opinion wise. Its no secret that i’m not a “child person” and as history is built on tyranny murder and destruction i have no qualms about leaving this planet in any less or worse of a state than which i was born into. Undoubtedly my family and friends will be having (or have had, yourself included Hooch) kids but this doesn’t change my views, we’ve all come into this life tackling whatever issues the planet has thrown at us and i expect the next generation to do the same. I am admittedly a very hard and yes probably cold person, but thats just the way it is.

I would be happier if i knew that everyone had the same basic human rights that we have, and a way of enforcing them. The fact is that if people in this country hadn’t rallied together in the past and forced companies and landowners and politicians to take notice then we wouldn’t be in such a good position now. A position from which it is very easy, ironically, to pretend that no-one else matters.

that is never going to happen..
as much as i would like to see it happen.. it never will..
the basic rights we have are not going to be seen as basic rights to someone in a third world country.. or a country where religion is law. they’re going to be seen as luxuries and sins..
we’ll never have a world where everyone is treated equally, where everyone gets what they deserve etc etc..
thats the world we live in and yes.. it’s good to stand up against the worst things..
but there has to be acceptance that things aren’t going to change to the way you want them to be..
there’s always going to be poverty, famine, unfair trade, child labour, animal slaughter, GM crops etc..
i’m not saying i agree with them… i’m just saying we can’t change that fact..
if we could surely it would have been done by now

Well there’s a chance that it will happen and a chance that it won’t, but if people keep fighting for the right causes then even if they only make a small amount of progress the next generation can take it from there and so on and so on. I can’t really imagine anyone thinking of the right not to be tortured, for example, as a luxury or a sin though! There probably always will be horrible things happening, but that’s not really a good reason to support evil regimes.
And that folks, is why I don’t buy Coca Cola.
@ Dan - I know. You pay lip service to the people who made it possible for you to live the life you do, but you personally won’t be around long enough to fanny around doing the same for anyone else. I’m glad we understand one another

I don’t support them.. i just don’t see how not buying coke is going to change the world for the better..
i’ve had discussions on the same lines as this one with people in my classes at uni and i can honestly say.. i said pretty much the same thing to them..
whether it’s about buying coke, or eating meat..
i’m in no way trying to be cynical, i’m being realistic..
there is a difference..
and really.. my age shouldn’t be a factor in what i think.. i could say the same thing whether i was 12 or 20.. i’ve read the facts, i’ve written essays on them, i’ve debated them, i’ve protested against them and rallied for them…
i’m as clued up and understand everything that’s happening..
i just don’t think of this as that trivial.. it’s important yes.. but not to the extent where it affects our every day life..
innocent people died/murdered and that’s terrible and it is a tragedy..
but innocent people are murdered everyday..
corporations aren’t to blame for that..
it’s the world that we as a society have made..

and about human rights..
torture is wrong.. in no way is that right at all.. i don’t agree with it, i don’t support it and i would never EVER consider it to be ok for any reason what so ever..
but in countires outside of ours, punishments used are a form of torture..
canings, stonings, beatings, whippings…
these aren’t considered a breach of basic human rights in the places they’re carried out..because it is that countries law.
the rights of a person in say iran or africa, are completly different to those of a person in the UK..
that isn’t going to change.

You’re right, in that in other countries all sorts of horrendous things happen within the law. But as I keep on saying over and over again - in the case of Coca Cola the trade unionists are being tortured and murdered by palamilitaries who are acting for Coca Cola. It isn’t a Guatemalan or Turkish or Russian company, and it’s not even acting within the law in those countries anyway. The Chief Executive is Irish, for fucks sake!!
You wouldn’t expect Therapy? to go over to Africa and take part in stoning an adulteress to death because the law permits it, would you? And if they did would you carry on buying their records?
