Semi-Detached. Good or Bad?

#

Started by Mick (Guest)

well this debate has been raging for a long time, but i wanna see if we can get a general opinion on this record, cos me 4 one loves it and don’t see it as the ‘necessary bad record’ that bands are supposed to have. t? ain’t had one, and they never will. i want as many opinions as possible. btw, teethgrinder, this site is amazing but can’t you delete messages off the messageboard like the bullshit ones from ‘matthew hunter’. that guys a timewaster… thanx!

Semi-Detached is a step towards the new album (SPYF), but not close enough ;-)
It ain’t bad at all … but sometimes a little too poppy … not that that is a bad thing … My favourite track is Straight Life. I’m still wondering why they haven’t put Suing God on that album as well …

Cheers !!!

Good. I have to agree with X on the fact that is a little too poppy at times, but there are some great songs on it. Church of noise, and Black eye purple sky being my favs. It’s no SPYF though…

Take care, Teethgrinder

BTW: There will be more stuff coming soon to this site, I’m working on it!

A strange thing - but I listen to it more favourably now since I have listened to SPYF a lot. Some of the songs on there are really heavy. But poppy too, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

It doesn’t excuse the fact that Don’t Expect Roses is an appaling song, and that Stay Happy sounded better before it metamorphosed from Again and Again.

I think Semi-Detached is great.. it’s strange that many regard that album as their weakest. But as always everybody is entitled to their own opinion.. I just wish they could play some of the songs from that album on their shows.. like Safe, Born Too Soon, Stay Happy etc.

In my opinion, and I really mean it, Semi-Detached is one of Therapy’s greatest albums. OK, there are some ‘weaker’ tracks, like tramline, but these are more than compensated by superb tracks like ‘Straight Life’ and ‘Lonely, Cryin’ only’. For me, it would be a pity if the guys from T? said farewell to this great style. If you can range T?’s albums, I’d say that Infernal Love and Semi-Detached are more or less ‘experimental’ albums (with some weird intro’s…), Troublegum was the commercial breakthrough, Nurse was pretty loud, Born in a Crash had some of all, and SP-YF is a ‘back-to-basic’ album. To put it in another way: Semi-Detached was (and still is) a superb album!

Yea I like it alot, in my opinion it’s better than Infernal Love, wich is the first Therapy? album I ever bought and I was only 13 or 14 back then I guess.. What was the year when it came out anyway? 95?
To my shame I have to admit that I haven’t bought the new album yet..
But I do have Nurse and Troublegum and soon Suicide Pact will be mine too…

Semi Detached is a good album on the whole and I can’t really say wich is my favorite song.
Straightlife maybe…

Semi-Detached took a bit to get into for me. I live in the states so it took me nearly a year to get a copy of it. Up until then it was Infernal Love all the way. Semi-d has a couple of my favorite songs on it: Safe and Tightrope Walker. Suing God would have to be my favorite non-album track (unless you have the Japanese Import copy).

Anyone who says that the record isn’t that great must be an ignorant pig.
Lonely, crying only is so good, i would kill for a record like that again.
(and also for a good night’s sleep).

Semi-detached was not a bad album. It was just worse than Nurse, Troublegum and Infernal love. In my opinion the main problem with Semi-detached was the singles that the chose to promote. I mean for Gods sake. I hated Church of Noise when I first heard it, but there are plenty of good tracks in the album that their AM company decided not to promote. A good album, but very low in the hierarchy, in comparison to the rest of the masterpieces.

Semi-detached is a great album from a great band…
With songs like safe and stay happy (which my own band does a cover of) shows how diverse a band like therapy? can be…
As with all of the other albums, of course Semi-detached is a good album

Interesting to hear people use the word ‘poppy’ as a negative. Hey, it’s all pop music. One of Andy and the band’s fundamental strengths is an ability to marry aggressive, angst-ridden sounds and lyrics to pop tunes and melodies. It’s possibly THE reason why they gained radio-play and singles sales in the UK, while less melodic American bands have consistently failed to find a foothold in the notoriously ‘poppy’ British market. Personally, I’m not overly bothered about whether ‘Semi-Detached’ is perceived as a weak link or not. I wasn’t enamoured of it when it came out, but now I love it. Sometimes my mood takes me there, and sometimes not. All I can say is that I find Therapy? a consistently rewarding experience, and I am looking forward to seeing them at the Astoria on March 2nd.

‘Semi-Detached’ is not the best album that Therapy? have ever released,
but it’s still great and probably better than any other album that came
out that year. It’s a lot more radio-friendly than most of ‘Infernal Love’
but it spawned ‘Lonely, Cryin’ Only’, one of the greatest songs they’ve
ever recorded. ‘Tightrope Walker’ and ‘Black Eye, Purple Sky’ both kick
ass. In fact, the first side of the album is excellent, although it becomes
a bit fitful after that.

Semi-Detached is T?’s best overall effort. Lyrically and emotionally only Troublegum can come close to touching this great fucking record. I disagree with J. Joyce Mason I think the first half is not even close to the same plan as the second half. SAFE, STRAIGHTLIFE, HEAVEN’S GATE, STAY HAPPY, DON’T EXPECT ROSES are all excellent songs. There’s only one problem with the record, like Infernal Love there’s a few songs that just don’t want to end cleanly and have ‘trash’ noise to close it out, like STRAIGHT LIFE; ME vs. YOU or 30 SECONDS off Infernal Love.

I like the album. It’s not as strong as say Troublegum but it’s got some good stuff on it. Tightrope Walker, Stay Happy and Straight Life being three that spring to mind.

I also agree that ‘poppy’ isn’t always so bad. Therapy? have always been able to come up with some excellent hooks in songs. Teethgrinder and Innocent X have a great guitar lines, and Potato Junkie has that cracking bass bit in the middle of it and these are all old ‘vintage’ stuff. SPYF has at least two ‘poppy tracks’ on it Jam Jar Jail and Sister.

I have problems with stuff like Korn (and this will probably get my arse kicked) because half the time I can hear very little structure, just loud guitar/bass/drums and a load of growling and shouting.

Sorry, but there it is.

Rz.

Everytime T? releases a new album it seems better than the last. Semi was an excellent album - I agree with Potato Junkies choice on tunes on this one. I loved the final song on the album as well (the name escapes me at the moment)

Semi is pop?
Have you not heard Troublegum - pop in every meaning of the word but its still fucking ace (with the exception of a few tracks). Who is to say that a poppy album cant be great? Are T? fans that narrowminded.

At places Semi is metal, some of the heaviest T? have done but then you have the poppy songs like Stay Happy and Don’t Expect Roses (both of which I love as much as Safe and Tightrope.

Just accept the stuff for what it is. Its like bands cant change direction without getting the piss ripped out of them. T? change on every album, compare Infernal to Troublegum - Is it the same band?
