Favourite Artwork/ Album Cover/ Packaging

Self-explantatory really, so what are your faves?

I have just dug ot my copy of Spiritualized’s “Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space” which is packaged like a pharmaceutical - i.e. the CD itself was in a sealed foil blister pack, the “inlay card” was in fact a leaflet done in the same type of paper and in the same format at that which you get in a box of pills (“What are the active ingredients of Spiritualized?…What is the recommended dose?” etc etc) and the outer box keeps the theme up with “For aural administration only. Use only as directed by a physician…Each tablet contains 70 min”.

All very cleverly done, looks great.

I am thinking less in terms of “oh nice cover” and more the overall package here.

Any good ones out there?

I thought the Peeping Tom one was cool - hard to explain how it works - you pull the cardboard inlay at one side and the cd tray slides out of the other…

The Pucifer ‘V Is For Vagina’ one is cool as well - its done in an airoplane safety manual style - complete with crapy illustrations.

The 10,000 Days and Vicarious single for Tool was cool - front mounted goggles and freaky 3d inlay cards!

There are others - Its nice when bands bother to do something interesting with the packing.

Well the 6 7” vinyl single boxset version of Semi Detached is awesome, except you have to change or turn it over after every song.

Aslo, Tool - Lateralus with the layered see through booklet, so it builds up a picture with the various layers shwoing through from behind

The Damage Manual - Limited Edition album with the lumpy mopulded palstic cover :) tis cool as

I’m trying to find a picture of the ltd edition version of Placebo’s Black Market Music. The cover has a kind of cog-wheel device thing on it and there was a version of the packaging that opened up in a similar way…

I think they have probably made their money back now, what with all the compilations and 80’s American teen-flicks it has been used on (and cue the scene where the young lovers split up and the puffy-sleeved college girl lays on her bed in despair and…yes, here it comes…It’s time for THE SMITHS TRACK!)

i’m with Den on the spiritualized one, vey fucking cool. I also love the Zeppelin “in thru the out door” concept: 7 different sleeves, all the same bar scene but each sleeve is seen from the perspective of someone different in the bar. Also the inner sleeves were white but changed to colour when you added water. And finally, if that aint enough, the album came in a brown paper bag so you didn’t know which one you’d be getting! super.

There are so many great sleeves out there, from all genres, its almost impossible to list favourites, but i tell you this: Zappa’s artwork is almost always fascinating. “weasels ripped my flesh”. Ace.

Sepultura’s Chaos A.D. in the metal box with an additional Sepultura flag inside was a nice one.

Apart from albums , I liked the idea of Metallica’s Live Shit: Binge&Purge ‘tour’ box , stuffed with the videos , tour/photobook , snake pit pass , triple live CD’s and the scary guy stencil.
Bought it around ‘93 when it came out and i remember paying the equivalent of about 120 euro for it , which was a fortune for a student those days.

I had a Pink Floyd box set thing that had all the cd’s in Black cases which had the “Dark Side of the Moon” prism design along the spines. I think you got all the albums, some bonus stuff (a live cd i think was included) and a book. Pretty nice it was. I think it cost around £120, but i got it at a trade fair for some of my dads old Beatles records and £20!! Sold it for £70 a couple of years later…

Can’t beat nice vinyl packaging. There are quite a few double vinyl gatefolds I really like, the last great one was Electric Wizard’s Witchcult today.

The Last Sucker Cd by Ministry had a George Bush/Lizard man hologram which was pretty funny (inspired by David Icke’s “lizard rulers” conspiracy theory)
