The Killers

#

Started by Andy D (Andy)

Hello guys

What do you all think of The Killers? I know they are high in the charts in the UK now but I’ve had their album before that (almost 2 months now and still in my car CD-changer).

Compared to this band, The Rapture, Franz Ferdinand, Hot Hot Heat and Interpol sound like bad Joy Division-impersonators.

I still love all those bands but The Killers are really really ace.

Listen to the opening track and you’ll hear Joy Division, Television, XTC and Afghan Whigs???? in one song.

The rest of the album is all “Killers” and no filler. Even their B-sides are better than any other song in the charts right now. Under The Gun is even the best song they ever made.

Under The Gun is my favourite and it’s not even on the album. Other favourites are the 3 singles (Mr Brightside, Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I’ve Done (the gospel at the end was heartachingly beautiful)), Andy, You’re A Star (our ode to T? until the second time the chorus is sung), On Top and every other song on the album. They simply don’t have one song worth skipping.

Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine is my definite favourite, period.
All the B-sides are ace as well but now there’s a re-issue now they are signed to Island/Def Jam. I don’t know wether or not to buy the album again or not. I’m not selling the original though as it means far too much for me and it might even become a collector’s item.

I believe that in Holland you had to wait until last week to get the album. Here in Belgium it’s been out since june.
On the other hand you get the chance to buy the version wiyh Change Your Mind on it. Great song but I have it on the Mr Brightside single so it’s only the video for Somebody Told Me I have to miss out on.

I’m going to go against the grain here by saying that I thought the album was bollocks! There’s some ok riffs on there, but as a whole the album made me go “uuuuurrrrrggghhhh!”, and then there’s his voice, which made me go “uuuuuuuurrrrrgggghhh!”

So then, just to sum up..

“Uuuuuuuurrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh!”

hmmm…for me you can add them in the “worst lyrics ever” thread…

looks like most of the bands now are just good enough to serve us sentimental soup instead of lyrics…

i thought Hot Fuss was a great album.

What i’ve heard of the new one though is lacklustre. The new single Bones is so cheesy. Hate the new image with a passion! What on Earth possessed them to dress like fat old alcoholic rednecks?! Worst image on a band i’ve seen since MSP went to Mothercare after Richey went!

Good live band as well, but I thought that their new tour show wasn’t as good as their last either.

Hot Fuss is good though. Especially “Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine”.

I checked out the first album after hearing they were influenced by the Smiths (?!)…it was alright, nothing special.

Next thing I see them on Live 8 and they’re apparently one of the biggest bands in the world. If I remember correctly the singer was wearing a white suit and generally looking and acting like a right bellend. The band were also pretty lousy live. Went off them after that and would happily use their new CD as a frisbee or mug coaster.

C & A, surely? Mothercare sell baby stuff, don’t they? Unless I missed MSP’s post-Richey “nappy and dummy” era? :)

Really liked Hot Fuss so was really looking forward to Sam’s Town - then heard it and thought ‘oh dear, bad case of ‘difficult second album syndrome”.

However, after about 5-6 plays it starts getting in your head - you start to like ‘When You Were Young’ and ‘Read My Mind’, ‘For Reasons Unknown’ and ‘This River Is Wild’ and even ‘Uncle Jonny’ and ‘Bling’ start to sound pretty good.

‘Bones’, however, does not grow on you - it is probably the weakest track on the album and a dreadful choice for second single.

At the moment I am besotted with the bit in “When you were young” just before the last chorus bit when the lyric runs “he doesn’t look a thing like Jesus but he…” and the keyboard riff plays on underneath like a marching band and has a clean bell-like quality. i think it’s inspired, and forms a sort of climax moment to the song. Worth buying the album just for that.

Killers are not a band I could ever get “into” but I think they are likeable enough. I thought they were English when I first heard them.

I loved Mr Brightside, bought Hot Fuss, wasn’t arsed. Saw them at V, thought they were awesome, listened to Hot Fuss more. Waited to hear more singles from Sams town, eventually gave in and bought it, now only listen to one song.

Which I could enjoy from Guitar Hero.

So there
