Put on St. Anger about 2 weeks ago because I’d just watched ‘Some Kind Of Monster’ and the riffs they use as incidental music in the movie always sound good. Alas, the album’s still shite.
S&M, even though it’s a covers album, is great.
I like Load and ReLoad, in an over indulgent, Use Your Illusion kind of way.
The new album? Well, I certainly won’t be buying it on the day it comes out. In fact, it’s unlikely I’ll be buying it the year it comes out.

I find it all kind of funny - during the Load of shite Reloaded years Lars told fans of their old music to grow up and that they would never play that type of music again. In all recent interviews he is now “the new album will be a throwback to our 80’s album”.
I like the Metallica tradition, but they have been shitting on it since the Black album.

New album will be influenced by where they are now and their 80’s stuff. The new song goes Hit the lights, I’m trying to read the property section

Sorry that was really cheesy.

“Garage” Inc. ;) It was a clever play on names by the band.
I will admit that I am also hopeful, but more doubtful.

And…they never had a problem with downloading..It was about not letting the people hear anything that wasn’t finished. As I Dissapear had been stolen from the studio and was making the rounds on napster bedfore theyd even finished recording it. Metallica felt like they had no control over what people heard.

Metallica instructed their attourneys to obtain a list of users who had downloaded items of copyrighted metallica material from napster with a view to prosecuting them… Lars was very, very vocal about internet piracy / theft until the backlash really started.

“We take our craft — whether it be the music, the lyrics, or the photos and artwork — very seriously, as do most artists. It is therefore sickening to know that our art is being traded like a commodity rather than the art that it is. From a business standpoint, this is about piracy — a/k/a taking something that doesn’t belong to you; and that is morally and legally wrong. The trading of such information — whether it’s music, videos, photos, or whatever - is, in effect, trafficking in stolen goods.” Lars Ulrich
I think it is far to say he has a problem with it…

I’m still looking forward to the new album. If Rick can do for Metallica what he did for Slipknot, then we’re in for a real treat.
Iowa was horrendous and Volume 3 was near perfect.

The problem isn’t the speed of their new music, it is the lack of variation. Old school Metallica used to write 6+ minute songs with loads of interesting riff and speed changes - essentially a nice display of skill and songwriting which inspired a following generation of Metal bands.
The Load / Reload tunes keep the song length intact (something which always drives me crazy with Metallica - it would be have as bad if the songs on the last 3 albums were around 3-4 mins long) but lack the song writing and variety of the golden days making them boring to me.
The only things I would credit about the last albums was the fact that you could finally hear the bass guitar better, the rhythym actually does what it says on the tin and Kirk finally grew up as a lead guitarrist. His “wah wah” solos were getting way too repetitive.
As for Lars Ulrich - he is only in it for the money so that he can buy more pictures for his mansion.

Fuel

The Memory Remains (although the bit with the granny makes me want to vomit)
Until It Sleeps
King Nothing
The Unforgiven II
Hero Of The Day
Bleeding Me
Fixxxer
The Outlaw Torn
11 pretty good songs in my opinion. I may be wrong , but by todays standards of hard rock/heavy metal that would be a fantastic album.
Although ‘Mama Said’ should go down as the worst thing they ever done. :D
I’ll buy the new album once its eventually out , but if i’m as dissapointed by it as I was with St Anger then i’ll say they need to call it a day.

Funnilly enough, I have to say that I like “Mama Said” as a tune. As for the track listing above, I agree that it should have been only one album and even though there are some nice ones on there, it is still a poor comparison to previous output.
St. Anger could have been a decent album in my books had they recorded it properly, added guitar solos, got a proper bass player and shortened the bloody songs - like holy crap, having an 8 minute song with frequent riff and tempo changes is fine, having one with 3 boring riffs just ain’t on.

I disagree with that, load and reload were waaaaaay more varied than anything else they ever did from c & w ballads to greasy blues riffing…it’s just that as the band themselves said they polished these two turds until they were releasable. I reckon this would have made a good album:
Fuel
St Anger
Devil Dance
Cure
Sweet Amber
Bleeding Me
Dirty Window
Purify
Prince Charming
Until It Sleeps
Shoot Me Again
One good record out of the last 12 years aint great tho!

@Buffalo Boy - you are talking about genre variation throughout a full album, I am talking about technical variation within a single song - the old school Metallica bitchslaps ‘Tallica when it comes to that.
Load and Reload do experiment with more genres (not that tricky, the old school albums were all speed / thrash metal), but they were still crap as Metallica is not particularly good outside of the Metal genre IMO.

Load and Reload weren’t crap because they weren’t Thrash, they were crap because Metallica don’t have the musicality to pull off the other genres they tackled.
