Rank the Manics albums from best to worst

#

Started by Superunknown

Sorry, if it’s been done before. I just feel like it right now ;)

1. This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours… to me this is the Manics at their peak. JDB’s best songwriting and lyrics that weren’t just political all the time.
2. Everything Must Go!… great singles and some more than decent album tracks.
3. JDB - The Great Western… I think JDB outdid himself with this solo record that he seems to have come up with so effortlessly. The B-Sides are even better.
4. Lifeblood… I would never have thought that this would end up so high on the list one day. I couldn’t stand it at all at first, but then the album revealed its beauty to me.
5. The Holy Bible… I don’t like it as much as everybody else and I think individual tracks on “Generation Terrorists” and “Gold Against The Soul” shine much brighter than anything on “THB” but as a whole it’s a pretty good effort.
6. Generation Terrorists… much too long, but nothing can beat “Motorcycle Emptiness”.
7. Gold Against The Soul… some songs that I still can’t stand (“Drug Drug Druggy”, “Roses In The Hospital”), but at least 4 top notch songs, too.
8. Know Your Enemy… “Ocean Spray” and “Found That Soul” are great. Then there are some decent tracks and a whole lotta turds.
9. Send Away The Tigers… I like the title track, “Your Love Alone Is Not Enough” and “Autumn Song”, but what really pulls this album down is that seems like a deliberate return to something in the vein of “Everything Must Go!”. Only it’s not as good and seems like a calculated turn to sell more albums again. And for a band as bigmouthed as the Manics that’s just pathetic.
10. Lipstick Traces… although JDB is one of the most prolific songwriters of all time his B-Sides are B-Sides for a reason.
11. Nicky Wire - I Killed The Zeitgeist… no matter how shitty the Manics might get in the future, this album will always be worse.

^^ if you dont like the manics then they probably are. However, who would post in a thread about the manics when they don’t even like the band.

I disagree with Gimmebackmybrainsaw. I don’t think Send Away The Tigers is their worst album . I think it’s their best since Everything Must Go. It’s easily better than This is My Truth. Word is they want Steve Albini for the next album - so i’m hoping for raw goodness with fuzz guitars and shouting a plenty :D

The Lipstick comp was pretty good , Judge Yourself was a great song. There cover of Nirvana’s Breed not so.

A band with a great best of and one album that was just wow at the time , even though i was just a meer child when released , I can see that its gone down in British Rock/Indie as a very important album. THB :)

I know I am clearly missing something, some people with intelligence, insight and good taste have rated it very highly.

I dont agree with this. I feel the manics realised they had strayed too far from what they were about in the old days. Hence the rumoured return to lo fi punk on the next album.Cannot wait !

The Manics have always been contrary so all arguments about such things are meaningless. That said tho you could level it by saying they are bunch of hypocrites which they are really!

1) The holy Bible
2) Gold
3) Generation Terrorists
4) This is my truth
5) Send away the tigers
6)Everything must go
7) Know Your Enemy
8) Lifeblood

For such a huge fan even I’M surprised by my low ranking of EMG and to have a think about that! I just think that image wise and soniaclly its very… bland. Good tunes tho!

The no image thing was deliberate. They weren’t the same band without RIchey so they wanted you to focus on the music instead of the image for once hence the everyday clothes ( for james and Sean at least ! )

yeah, damn right they were and that’s exactly what I’m expecting from a band as it matures. I don’t want to see them doing the same thing over and over again and watch men in their 40’s trying to recapture the glory of their 20’s.

Still, I would love them to work with Albini. I don’t think they have really made a lo-fi punk recording, yet (yes, I don’t think of “The Holy Bible” as lo fi, but maybe “Motown Junk” came close)
