Best Intro To A Song

#

Started by Charlie (The Monsters Of Muskeg)

What song do you feel kicks off in the greatest way ?

I thought of this thread after constantly playing Iron Tusk by Mastodon - that drum roll is OUTSTANDING.

Also I am quite partial to F—-ing in the Bushes by oasis. CLANG !! massive drum beat..

I realise those are both drum intros…

Sad But True is an awesome intro - the way the guitars are detuned a whole tone to D, but the song doesnt start on the open D, it starts in G, so when the main riff kicks in ( after that legendary drum fill ) you get this masive riff in low D - genius !

More when I can think of any.

I love the intro to the Stiff Little Fingers version of ‘Johnny Was’ - I know it doesn’t have any massive technical merit, but it is perfect for the song and it always gets me giddy when I hear it :)

can’t really say that i have a favourite/best intro, but as long as it compliments the song & doesn’t lead it somewhere too weird, then I don’t mind.

Not the ‘bet’ but one intro that comes to mind is get your groove on by the wildhearts.

Andy Cairns’ voice is perfect for that bit.

Many ministry songs have great starts.

ooh , GREAT topic!! I’ve had many a discussion about this over the years. Personal faves off the top of my head are the false start of “go” by pearl jam. The false start of “jailbird” by primal scream. “The fly” by U2, that just kills me every time. Also a contender for greatest comeback single ever too. I think my fave is possibly “cherub rock” by smashing pumpkins, the wave of distortion after the quiet is just…god, it kills me man!

The intro to “The Fly” sounds a bit like a Therapy?-track, but I can’t put my finger on it (no, it’s not “Sister” ;-) ).

Then it sounds a bit like that annoying song from “Enchanted” that got nominated for an Oscar.

Stand up for Rock and Roll By Airbourne.

Slow build which intensifies for about a minute before launching into a full on fist-pumping, sweat-drenched, riff monster. It’s absolutely epic.

No love for “Punishment Kiss”?
It sounds a bit pansy on the album, but try and check out a live version from the Illosaarirock Festival in 1997 when they used it to open their set and it sounded massive. Swirling feedback loops and cymbal crashing = a good intro in my book!

That reminds me, the Thrash intro for Teethgrinder that they used to play live and also features on one of the BBC sessions is suberb, how could i forget that?

And the bassline at the start of innocent x

the drums at the start of Skiining Pit

but I must say live i particularly like the intro of sprung.

And Welcome to the Jungle… as that is still one of my fav albums and its a great way to start an album let alone a song.

Where to begin on this one…

Big fan of the long , bombastic intros. Led Zeppelin are the kings of great intros imo and at a first thought special kudos to Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell and Pink Floyd’s Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
Today by Smashing Pumpkins is not too bad as is Sunshine of Your Love by Cream , it just rocks.

To pick one it has that spoken intro from the theme to The A Team !

They said ‘they are now in civilian clothes’ that makes everybody free game,
But if they came in our perimeter, we lit ‘em up.
And when we would pull the body out, and when we would search the car, we would find nothing.
This took place time and time again. No harm, no foul, that’s OK, don’t worry about it,
Because this is a new type of war, this is an eradication.”

awesome.

Shit, I forgot about those guys - “Gardenia” has an intro that rocks like a mo-fo. Actually, the entire song rocks like a mo-fo!

I dont think that these ones got something I would call an intro. although these were some of my favorite songs all time. Stop it you are killing me would be maybe a better example for a song with an intro.

Cemetary Gates off the same album is better. It’s about 2 minutes long if you count until the main riff kicks in. Mild and pleasant strumming with Anselmo over the top of it in places which escalates into a huge power crescendo and a colossal riff that’s heavier than osmium.

Cemetary gates fucking rules man.
