mp3 player advice

#

Started by realityfuck (Richard Splash)

Thinking of buying a new mp3 player. All I want is a device with a decent capacity (8gb or or more) and that’s reliable. Not interested in going blind looking at videos.
Any recommendations, warnings, gratefully accepted.

my creative zen microphoto 8gb packed up lately for no apparent reason, only 14mths old. It was replacement from Creative after the orignal one packed in after about 3 mths. Need to get a new one soon so i’d welcome advise also.

I started with a Zen Micro which looked very nice but had a design flaw and broke (twice) so I’d avoid Creative products. Then I got an iPod mini, the sound was OK but the design isn’t that great, it feels a bit cheap.

After that I got a 20G iRiver which was very reliable, then I upgraded to a 60G iAudio x5 - excellent sound and design, if you can afford a bit extra I’d recommend it.

I used to have (well still do) a 40gb Creative Zen, but now I’m an Archos convert - they have a selection of decent sized 4gb - 120gb models… What price bracket are you looking at?

I regularly check http://www.hotukdeals.com (i have it on RSS feed) and they have had some cracking deals on there - if I see anything I’ll link to it from this thread if you like

I have had the same 40GB ZEN for 3 years now. Don’t know how many times I have dropped it etc. - has proven a solid device for me. Is a bit of a brick, but I am hanging on until it gives up on me :)

It’s pretty sturdy. Plays FLAC files which not all mp3 players do (for CD-quality sound)

I really like about this one that it is small, you can clip it on your clothe (works pretty fine at sports), dont need extra battery as it recharge the internal one over USB and it is sounds pretty well.

I had a Creative Zen 40Gb one, dropped it into a bucket of muddy water tried it a couple of times after I’d dried it - didn’t work. So went & got the 120Gb version as the 40Gb one had been good (until my accident with it) no stalling, no reseting, not heating up when in use. And I’m glad to say that it’s still the case with my 120Gb. I honestly doubt I’ll fill it up, but I like having the space available :-D .

Hope your guys find ones you like.

Don’t bother with a Sony. The media player it runs from is slower than a retard in an egg and spoon race and seems to be utterly uncompatible with, well pretty much everything really.

Seems to be a mixed reaction to the Creative Zen. At the moment I’ve got a 4gb Zen, but the headphone socket is playing up, have to keep adjusting the wire. At first I thought I needed new headphones, but no, it’s the device itself. Also, it’s out of warrenty, so can’t return it.

@ deadsetgav - looking at spending about €200, maybe more if I see something I think is worth it.

@ butters - I was always more an ‘aiwa’ man than a ‘sony’ man.

^ Some of the Zen 4GB has design faults - exactly as you describe, the headphone socket breaks and leads to distorted sound. Mine broke after a few months, I got a replacement, and that also broke in exactly the same way.

Here’s my post from a few years ago about it:

“The Creative Zen Micro is fucking rubbish, don’t buy one.

I started reading warning reviews shortly before mine fucked up, I sent it back at my own expense and had to wait three weeks for another, and the bastard’s just broken again, in exactly the same way, after less than a month.

I shall be straight down Argos this weekend to get my money back, and if they refuse I will smash up their cheap jewellery counter.”

I second that.

Have you thought of an Ipod nano?

Although the Archos headphones are good, Bose or whatever you call it makes Archos headphones sound shit!
