Agree about both things.

Isn’t “The Everlasting” another song Wire really, really hates? I love it. I can’t stand “The Masses Against The Classes” myself.

WORST MANICS SINGLES!!

1) life becoming a landslide - sensitive melancholy lyrics and metal riffing don’t work!
2) you stole the sun from my heart - i know it’s a fave but i can’t stand it!
3) repeat - dodgy song anyway- as a single (even a double A-side with love’s sweet exile which is also crap!) its a sure no-no
4) So Why So Sad - absolute crap. nuf said.
5) Let Robeson sing - great guitar riff but why did they think the masses would want to sing along to a song about paul robeson? (or even know who he is!)

Anyone else got a top 5?

So Why So Sad is pretty fucking atrocious, I agree. When it came out I just couldn’t fathom what the fuck they were playing at. I loved Found That Soul, which came out as a single the same day, but I couldn’t understand how one band could put two songs that were so far apart on the “Good - Shit” scale out in the same year never mind the same day/ album.

I agree about “Let Robeson Sing”. I don’t even think the riff is any good.
“Repeat” is okay. “Life Becoming A Landslide” I really like.
“So Why So Sad” is a weird one, because althought the melody and most of all the production are mediocre, the song is kinda intriguing to me. Not a complete failure anyway, because they sounded daring on that single.

i thought ‘so why so sad’ was ruined by the jingly christmas sleigh bells. a less bright production job would have made it cooler.

i’m just a patsy is one of their best songs ever IMO. and just to rub in for dennis when I saw them live they played it… and Archives of Pain - fuck yeah!

but it just goes on forever live. i like the song, but not live. it just lasts too long. and occasionally acoustic, crikey.

Albums-

1. Gold Against The Soul
2.Know Your Enemy - I rate it. love it when bands go off on one like this. Apart from So why so sad. that’s pretty irredeemable for an albumtrack, let alone a single.
3.LifeBlood
4.Everything Must Go
5.Holy Bible
6.This is my truth
7.Send away the tigers
8.Lipstick traces
9.generation terrorists - Everything beyond Motorcycle emptiness hasn’t aged well…I definitely have to be in the mood for it

And yeah, so why so sad is clearly the worst manics song AND single. The video’s shite too.

Just listening to “The Holy Bible” again. I don’t really get why everybody thinks so much of it. It’s not very punk to me, rather polished. And James’ vocals just sound forced and not threatening or raw or whatever.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the album, I just don’t think it’s what the Manics sound best at doing.

For me the Holy Bible is the only Manics album that doesn’t sound compromised in any way. It’s a bit of a one-trick pony but I like that about it - I like the single-minded feel of it, the way Bradfield uses guitar sounds that he hadn’t really used before or since but that seem to tie the whole album together…the claustrophobic atmosphere and the fact that it feels like a huge full stop, a line drawn underneath everything they’d done up to that point.

It’s not very punk, no, and I don’t suppose it was meant to be either, and I think the “forced” vocals are part of why it works, not a flaw.

If ever there’s a better example of music and lyrics complimenting each other perfectly, I can’t think of it.

i know its all opinions but my mouth fell open when i read ‘The Holy Bible sounds rather polished’!!!! eh??
ok, compared to The Exploited it does and production wise its all been edited so there’s no overspill or noise but that guitar sound is the most beautifully horrendous confined squall on the planet!

i love jdb’s forced vox - they are definately meant to be like that - there’s no ‘breathiness’ to the voice, (apart from TIY) its just a solid noise all the way through which is how i like it!

THB is a truly disturbing, unsettling album. If that is achieved by being “polished” (which I don’t agree with anyway) so be it!
The US mix that came with the reissue is more polished, but again that doesn’t detract from it. Some songs are better for it, some worse.

I like “This is my truth”. It’s not a kick ass rock album, but I like that atmosphere, that specific mood this album has. And I also think that “Know your enemy” is underrated album. I didn’t like it at first, but it’s kind of album, which grows on you. Just give it a chance. However, I must agree, that it’s a bit to long, there are some fillers, they should have dropped at least 2 or 3 songs from this album.
