I quite enjoyeed Wrestlemania. I even booked the day off work today so I could stay up and watch it last night. Ain’t I a loser?

I think pro wrestling is a highly skilled and entertaining performing art. Performers guide the viewer through stories via the age-old medium of hitting folk with chairs. It is physically demanding and the ability to deliver moves which look dangerous in a safe and controlled fashion is a rare talent. The fact that these guys also use their bodies and their responses to these situations to convey simple emotive storytelling is a very special balance.

Whilst it is completely accurate to say that it is not real, that should not diminish the talent, commitment and skill these guys have. When it comes down to it, on a night like Wrestlemania, where you can’t bo 100% sure who will win, it’s pretty electrifying, edge-of-your-seat stuff, even though it is all pre-determined.

I really enjoy watching a bot of wrestling, much in the same way as I enjoy going to the theatre or watching a good film.

Any good wrestling school ought to show you how it’s done now. and it’s probably only 10ft, but that’s still scary enough

I don’t suppose falling off a ladder from any given height is particularly difficult.

:D There’s a chap here at work who is particularly good at falling off ladders. In fact, as there are only 6 of us in the company anyway, he has the monopoly on the Accident Book. I think his first name has been seen next to the word “ladder” more times than it has been seen next to his surname in our company’s paperwork. Unless of course his name IS Roy Ladder, but I don’t think it is. Could be quite a lucrative name in the wrestling world though? “Roy The Ladder”…? Strike fear into anyone’s bones that? Ah maybe not then.

I haven’t watched any wrestling for ages, I do enjoy it though. It doesn’t really matter how much is scripted and faked, like the bomb said, it’s just like watching a film.

I with Dan on this one. Wrestling to me is like watching a film directed by comic book fanboy and written by a room full of monkeys with typewriters. But if it floats your boat, I’ve no problem with it.

Whilst it might lask the artistic kudos of Shakespeare in the round, directed by Olivier and featuring a naked Oliver Reed, it is a lot more accessible to many sectors of society. It manages to show people a skilled and athletic performance without intimidating and putting them off by using the term theatre.

The storylines usually are laughable and insignificant, but welcome to pop culture guys. If you offered 4 beer swilling sunburnt Texans the chance to see a piece of physical theatre, choreographed smooth dance moves on the floor, performed by several semi-naked men telling a classic story of good vs evil they’d kill you. But what I described is essentially the basis of most Pro Wrestling.
