When Good Bands Do Bad Things

#

Started by RoyBatty (Steve)

Ever have a band you like release an album or song so crappy, so head shakingly shitty, that you found yourself wondering why you ever bothered in the first place? For me, this was when Iron Maiden released the soft, radio-ready goofball “Can I Play With Madness?” (renamed “Matches.”) Still can’t get my head around that one.

Also, Metallica and “Enter Sandman.” (Though, I guess the BA has grown on me over the years.)

Anyone else experience this?

My watershed moment for something like this was when RATM released “Battle for LA” - dont think Ive ever been so disappointed by an album in my life

Ironically Ci?, Foo Fighters released a post Colour & The Shape album the same day (cant remember what it was called) that was surprisingly good - much better than Rage’s effort anyway! Stacked Actors was the first song I think

That would be Nothing Left To Lose. Dont you think Grohl may have been bored of playing heavy rock by then though ? He says he loves pop melodies.

Yeah, I don’t mind the Foos. Some songs are better than others, but nothing really has pissed me off too much.

I never quite got over the shock of listening to Risk by Megadeth, even if it’s been nine years since it was released. Load by Metallica was nearly on the same level of crapness when I first heard it, but that has grown on me a bit over the years, whereas I still consider Risk to be utter shite. Luckily Dave has seen the error of his ways and started making proper music again, with a steadily rising level of quality in the albums since Risk *cringes at having to type the name again*

Oh yes, absolutely. So many bands just end up letting you down!

Oasis - loved the first album, but I remember them premiering their song “Roll With IT” at Glastonbury on TV and I clearly recall cringing at how trite it was.

Also having followed the Manic Street Preachers for so long there have been quite a few “WTF?!” moments.

René, yes indeed. Luckily I never got as far as buying Risk, but a mate of mine did, and we were aghast as we listened to it. I’d be curious to hear it again, since I’ve basically blocked all memory of what it actually sounded like out of my mind. But I don’t want to.

Don’t do it, d. It will be as bad as the first time you’ve listened to it - believe me, I’ve tried. When I first listened to it I simply could not believe what I was hearing and thought it was some sort of weird joke I didn’t get. Marty is a great guitarist, but Dave made a serious mistake when he gave him - along with producer Dann Huff - more control over Megadeth’s musical direction.

Absolutely. I remember hearing Breadline on the radio and throwing up in little in my mouth. United Abominations is quite good, though, I think.

I never heard Maiden on AOR radio in the States until Matches. But, hey, commercial appeal is pretty subjective, isn’t it? Look at T?.

Foo Fighters - Theres nothing left to loose. I was dissapointed with The Colour and The Shape as there was alot of cheese on it but the album after it was so middle of the road, haven’t bothered with them since.

@Gav - I know you say they got it back but I haven’t dared research your claim yet.

And Stiff Little Fingers ‘Now Then’ The whole album was such shite I was forced to make it into a fruitbowl.

I got hold of a copy of Democracy and have had it on loads recently - really good album! really good band - I cant be arsed to go back and listen to the shit albums so I’ve no idea how bad they became.

It doesn’t really matter - cause Jaz Coleman is a massive fuckin loon and that makes him interesting!

Ok - I’ll keep my eye out for democracy, and then I’ll know whether to ever trust you again :p And yes he is. I can honestly say that some of the best moments of my life were spent on the stage with Killing Joke. That’s back in the day when if you were a girl and not scared of doing a bit of shoving you could sit where you liked :) I’d give anything for them to just come back for one night exactly how they were (“Jaz, Geordie, oof and Bow” as Sarah used to call them :D Bless). So I’m going to trust you for old times sake and look out for this album of which you speak. And hope I don’t think it’s pants, because I’d rather not know if it is.
