Cloverfield. Just watched it.

Really Enjoyed it. However just found out about the secret ending so will have to watch it again :P

I thought it was really good - MILES better than Godzilla from a few years ago and miles fucking better than The Host, which started good but ended up being boring and poor.

I agree about The Host, didn’t rate it at all. Apparently Cloverfield is going to be the first part of a series of films by the way

The Secret Ending :

Apparently, you have to watch iton dvd to see it, but after the tunnel collapses with Rob and Beth inside,it cuts to them on a ferris wheel a few weeks before and it shows the sea, if you look closely you can see somthing fall in the water way off in the distance. Then after the credits have finished, someone shouts ” it’s still alive “.

apparently the sequels arent going to be continuing on from where the last one left off, but rather the same events from someone elses perspective.

There’s a moment on the Brooklyn Bridge, and there was a guy filming something on the side of the bridge, and Hud sees him filming and he turns over and he sees the ship that’s been capsized and sees the headless Statue of Liberty, and then he turns back and this guy’s briefly filming him. In my mind that was two movies intersecting for a brief moment, and I thought there was something interesting in the idea that this incident happened and there are so many different points of view, and there are several different movies at least happening that evening and we just saw one piece of another.

theyve said they might also explore the possibility of doing a back story, maybe exploring the origins of the monster. rumours have also gone round that bits and pieces might be uploaded to youtube in the future.
the whole thing was a really good concept, whether you like the movie or not, personally i loved it, mostly cos im a hardcore lost fan and cant fault anything thats produced by th same guys.

The Host was in fact quite good. At sucking that is.

I prefer the original (ie, Japanese) Godzilla movies myself, even though there’s a few crap ones as well (particularly the kiddie one starring Godzilla junior). Nothing says Godzilla like the roar, the music whenever the Japanese army drives towards whatever coastal city Godzilla will appear at. With the laser cannons obviously, lest there be any mistake.

apparently trey parker and matt stone’s next movie is gonna be an homage to godzilla and other gaiju films. its gonna be called ‘Giant Monsters Attack Japan!’ and is basically gonna be men in rubber suits kicking each others ass. cant wait

Aye i was glad i went to see cloverfield in the cinema, some great scenes, liked the subtle shots of the ‘beast’ (whatever the fuck it was) amongst other things. dunno if will buy the dvd but. bought ‘the host’ on dvd and have only watched it once but its defo better than godzilla. as you know, a lot of people where put off by the way cloverfield was filmed as in the ‘blair witch project’, i think both these movies suffered from ‘hype’ exposure, which caused a lot of people to say they where shit just because the way they where filmed, even if they hadnt seen it! What!?

I have no problem with the way Cloverfield is filmed - if anything i think it heightens the mood and the reality. It’s nice to see something original for a change.

a lot of people are saying if diary of the dead came out before cloverfield it would have been a greater success, but cloverfield kinda stole its thunder by showcasing that style before it [despite blair witch originating it]
i just say diary of the dead was bollocks

oh, ive been reading lots into the secret ending and theories on the monster and stuff like that. its not so much a secret ending but rather just something really hard to spot in the real ending. in the final scene after the monster stuff with the two characters at coney island on the ferris wheel, when the camera is looking out at the ocean, if you look real close you can see something falling into the ocean at the right hand side of the shot. its not actually the monster though, its a falling japanese satellite that was referred to in the viral marketing campaign that is likely to have awoken the monster.
theres not much information about what the monster actually is, but its most likely a mutation of something. another viral marketing campaign mentions a drink called slusho [slusho is used in pretty much all of jj abrams projects], and how a secret ingredient of slusho is a kind of deep sea cactus nectar or something like that. if you go to the slusho website and and go to the history section, theres a pretty interesting story http://slusho.jp/
whatever the monster is, according to abrams its just a baby.
one more thing to note, at the end of the film theres a distorted audio, if you listen close enough you can just about make it out and it says ‘help us’ but…when the audio is reversed, it also says ‘its still alive’

anyway, time for me to go learn some more decimal places of pi

Ya. What i want to know is - what is the point of viral marketing if most people ae never going to see it, and are only going to watch the movie and deide whether they like it or not…

I nearly always go to IMDB after I’ve watched a film to find out more, but i’m not really arsed to go and find out all the information about the monster and the satellite and what not.

Heard it was indeed bollocks tho. Haven’t bothered looking for it online yet, heard it’s out on DVD next month anyway :-)

I was hungover at the cinema when I saw Cloverfield, and about 1/3rd of the way back so faaar too close for my own good - the hangover, effort spent on refocussing and the glaring screen/shakey-cam all came together to make me feel what I assume was abit sea-sick!

I found it to be passable, some great bits but too much to pick holes in without trying for my liking and end, well that just dragged and dragged until the funky little bit with the ferris wheel/splash in the background and so on - thought that was a good touch.

Missing the point much? It was supposed to be like you were watching someone’s home video. You know what It’s like when you have a camcorder. You always film too much that you will never watch again. It was going for realism. I think the pacing was perfect. :)

Fordonian wrote:

Nope, I meant the end and without spoiling it too much for anyone who hasn’t seen it, I recall it going something like this;

Hmmmmm, should we fucking die…no, hang on a minute, we don’t want to do that, we’re human for fuck sake! Y’know the compactable, breakable, squashable flesh and blood sort! So with that in mind - instead of dying… why don’t be the only ones who survive the improbable, just us that is, nobody else who was with us - afterall, their not in a good 90% of the film are they so fuck them, its as if they were cast to die… Oh and what a bastard stroke of shit-luck it is to find Mr Big Monster has suddenly turned up right next to us! Que disastre!

However, we can’t be soft and let that get to us, we must keep in mind that we’re the special ones so most of us will survive again… and oh look, as if by magic its fucked off and left us alone, marvelous! It seems that we’re so very, very good at surviving that even the little things that killed EVERYONE in sight earlier seem to have left us alone for some reason - why on Earth would they do that?!? Ho hum, at least they did eh? To be honest I thought we’d have been easy pickings what with our existing injuries (some of which are pretty horrific I have to say) and so we wouldn’t really do that much to defend ourselves! Right, we’ve had our monster fun so whats left to do… I know… lets fuck off over there and finally die eh? Though I do suspect that we’ll find out in the morning that its just us and the cockroaches left. Hallelujah, Lord be praised!

I think that was it, wasn’t it? :)
