Fyfe’s drum sound on Nurse

#

Started by Sabotage

How did Fyfe get that snare drum sound in particular on the Nurse album?
Any drummers out there know?

The drummer in my band was asking.

Do you mean the actual snare sound, or that drum he uses that “kinda” sounds like a snare? i.e. the one used on Teethgrinder, Hypermania etc…

I have no idea what that particular drum is called, but you can recreate it’s sound by getting a second snare and taking the metal rail from underneath out, and tuning the top skin very tightly.

But that’s just my amateurish messing about. If another drummer knows for sure what that drum is called, I’d sure like to know!

That’s the one. So it’s a regular tom-tom which he uses as a snare eh?

sounds like a piccalo snare drum (those thin ones) with the actual snare taken off to me. Drummer in my band has one and it makes the same sorta sound

Did Fyfe himself send you the letter?

I wish I had his kit, I’m kinda surprised there’s no 18” crash at all. There’s a big gap between 16” and 22”.

I wish I’d gotten that info before I bought my kit in 1998. I’ve a standard Pearl kit:

20” kick drum
14” snare
12” & 13” toms
16” floor tom
14” hats (Sabian)
16” & 18” crash (Sabian)
20” crash ride (Paiste)

If it wasn’t for the fact I’m poor, I’d change it all for Fyfe’s kit :(

Actually, I noticed from the picture on the “Divers” single, that he changed from Sonor to Pearl, so at least it’s something like my kit!

“latin percussion timbale”, eh? I must look for one of them!! :)

Cheers.

no, fyfe’s drum tech sent me the letter.

i was also surprised that there’s no 18” crash. my first set was also a pearl slx, nearly the same as yours, but a 22” bd instead of your 20”. the only thing i kept to myself was my old snare, it’s a 13”x3” pearl piccolo snare. sounds a lil bit like the snare on helmet’s betty. :)

but at least the sonor set sounds lot better… imo. really love that sonor sound. the LP timbale is exactly that what he uses in teethgrinder. it really rocks!! get one, you won’t be disappointed. ;)

i don’t know if he changed from sonor to pearl. i’ll keep my sonor set. ;)

cheerz.

I’ve always heard great things about Sonor.

I guess Fyfe had a Pearl kit in “Divers” ‘cos he was poor, without all that Therapy? money rolling in!

Yeah, but the band memeber OWNS all their own kit, unless it’s hired but I’d imagine Fyfe has a few Kits as a proffesional drummer. He probably just wanted a different sound.

harvey birrell did a great job gettin fyfes drum sound just right. the second snare that really gave therapy? there trademark drum sound has no snare wire and the skin is tightened up to bustin point. the ‘pop’ from the main snare is unreal, so precise, but to get away with that sound your
timing has to be machine like. By the way does anyone else but me hate grahams drum sound? Its flat and non descript on nearly everything recorded with him, with a few notable exceptions.

This may be of interest regarding Fyfe’s set-up & gig requirements. It’s from the hire agreement that their tour manager sent to the promotor prior to Therapy’s show in Stockholm 29/6/94…

“Please note the kit is a mixture of Sonor drums and Pearl hardware.
Please also note that the Pearl racksystem is very important and highly necessary. The drummer plays very hard. A normal drum kit set up on stands will only fall apart.
1 Pearl rack system
6 Boom cymbal arms for rack
1 Tom arm for rack
1 Straight arm for a drum pad
2 Pearl snare stands
1 Drum stool with back support
1 Hi-hit stand
1 Bass drum pedal
1 14” timbale (with 14” Remo Ambassador batter head)
1 14x6” Snare drum (metal based only, not wooden) (with 14” Remo falam coated head)
1 13” Rack tom (with 13” Remo pinstripe head)
1 16” Floor tom (with 16” Remo pinstripe head)
1 18” Floor tom (with 18” Remo pinstrpe head)
1 24” Bass drum (with 24” Remo pinstripe head)
1 Large drum carpet
1 Stage weight (for bass drum)
1 Fan
1 8ft wide x 8ft deep x 2ft high drum riser
1 Zildjian set of 14” Newbeat hi-hats (or Quickbeat)
1 Zildjian 19” custom medium crash
1 Zildjian 19” rock crash
1 Zildjian 22” crash/ride
1 Zildjian 22” power ride
1 Zildjian 22” china boy low”
