When you say robot companion, you mean R2D2 minus any significant budget for the animators? I remember that as well.
The one thing I remember watching as a kid was He-Man. Including the ever annoying public service announcement tacked to the end of each episode. Oddly enough there never was one encouraging kids to go outside and play soccer or something as opposed to watching crap cartoons.
