Thy never intended to make a Master style album.
In all interviews so far they have been saying that they have chosen the Masters of Puppets era as their inspiration for the new album. I personally see it as cheap attempt to get more people to buy without listening (after St. Anger, never making that mistake again! - Lars you bastard!).
I agree with Buffalo Boy regarding the lyrics on the preview.
Anyways, time will tell, just my opinion.
At least it will probably have guitar solos again.

So what goes on the album is the absolute cream of the crop.
all i’m saying is that if you’ve made fifty, thats FIFTY cd’s of music and its taking you years to put 10 tracks together, well…doesn’t bode well do it? What happened to writing maybe, what, 15 tracks and picking the best 10 and using the rest as b sides, eh? Thats not just metallica either, there any many other bands.

Just think of that scene in Some Kind Of Monster when fuckface Ulrich is selling his rubbish art collection for 27 BILLION dollars EACH (OK I may exaggerate, but you get the general idea) when you part with your hard-earned cash to watch Metallica dick around in the studio in low-fi.

Have you seen the SKOM outtakes where they are doing the rap song with Ja Rule?? These middle aged men nodding along pretending to ‘get’ whats going on lol! I can’t even entertain the thought of ol Bob Rock rapping with that image in my head!

I know Metallica get slagged on the WoM quite a bit (most of it deservedly so), but I’m still a pretty big fan. I just felt the albums after …And Justice for All were mediocre and uneven. However, aside from lyrically, I didn’t think St. Anger was nearly as shit as everyone else here — though I got bored with it rather quickly. I do think Metallica still have the potential to put out something decent though. It’s a shame they got so big so fast and now feel the pressure to please everyone simultaneously: old fans, new fans, label, radio, etc. . Prisoners of a self-made corporate construct, they’re seemingly incapable of just saying ‘fuck it,’ and making whatever album they wanna make. Anyway, my 2 cents.

Judging by Some Kind of Monster (i.e. the film not the song) I think the problem is they don’t KNOW what album they want to make. They want to get away from the Thrash of their early years, and they are hung up about not doing anything that is too stereotypically “Metallica”…but they don’t have an alternative solution.

hetfield is quoted as saying he hates ‘holier than thou’ because it sounds like their ‘old’ way of writing ie - it is vaguely thrashy. I agree with the above, ok they don’t want any thrash in their sound but fucking ‘heard-it-a-million-times-before-blues-riffing’? Yawn.

I appreciate Metallica trying to broaden their scope and all, only problem is that they are no good anything else other than their own blend of thrash.
It is still beyond me that they insist overplaying riffs which results in all of their songs ending up as 7+ minute affairs. Was really boring on their last three attempts.
Let them wipe the tears from their eyes with their millions - I have no pity for them, especially for dissing those loyal supporters who liked them for their thrash output.
This ultra-ego “John Lennon and Paul McCartney” of our generation shite has really gone to their heads.

Agreed. But I think the reason they don’t KNOW is because they continue to believe they need to serve so many masters, whereas in reality, a large section of their would-be fanbase simply couldn’t give a shit what they do or don’t do. (c.f. the many posts here on the WoM)
