I can see why you might think it was boring judging by the first series, but this was mainly just setting up the initial mythology of the show.
If you were to watch on of the more recent episodes youd think it was a completely different show altogether.

i put a disclaimer up top anyway.

every year the producers give a comment about the finale at the halfway stage of the season, this year it was ‘the frozen donkey wheel’
at least we know what that was about. usually its never that literal

holy shit, i stayed up till 7 am friday morning, to watch it. then bloody work calls me in at half 2, but being nackared was worth it for that episode, very cleverly done, though it diddnt seem to answer anything of much importance.

what about who was in the coffin, how the island was moved, how ben managed to travel into the future
i felt it answered more questions than asked, which is usually what the finales do.

what were you hoping to be answered

well, i kinda always assumed it was locke in the coffin, and i dunno, like i wanted some sort of event to trigger them having to lie about the island, rather than it just being out of panic, i always seemed to think through the flashforward episodes there was something huge being hidden.

I’m not comin back to this thread until I watch the episodes tonight, but if we’re talking about the coffin that Jack went to pay his respects to when he was going off the rails a bit, I always thought it was Michael cos the funeral home was in a kind of ghetto hood. It would also explain why no one else turned up

i was always undecided between locke and michael…michael cos of the ghetto hood thing, but then i thought it might not be michael cos the parlour was in LA and if it was michaels it more likely would have been new york.

I thought it was OK last night, *SPOILERS* I don’t think Locke will be dead for good. I don’t think Jin really died either.

There was a good show on afterwards presented by Iain Lee (!), two of the main writers were being interviewed, they were quite funny - looks like a great job they have

yeah i heard about the two ‘alternate’ scenes but hadnt seent them. they filmed them cos theres this dude called ‘lostfan108’ who posts spoilers for the last episode every year. although the alternates didnt fool him this year and he still knew it was locke. seems like they have someone on the crew who isnt entirely trustworthy.

dermot i dont think hes dead for good either, i think its gonna be a whole new christian shepherd thing again when lockes body gets to the island and he sort of comes back to life.
i doubt that jin is dead cos i think hes gonna have some part in bringing sun back to the island and im not even completely sure that michael is dead either.

what i want to know is the ‘bad’ things that happened on the island because of jack leaving, seems like next season is gonna be a pretty dark one

give me an example. I don’t believe that they thought the show would be such a success, its rare that shows are that sucessful. even if stuff is appearing in it now that harks back to the first series it means nothing really, thats what writers are for. i’m sure there is plenty of stuff that appears in some of the series that have not been fully explained.

one example would be the old wooden ship that was somehow 5 miles inland with no plausible explanation as to how it got there.
we discover at the end of season 4 that the island can be moved, at one point 400 years ago the island was moved to a place that this ship was floating in and so, when the island reappeared the ship ended up smack in the middle of the island. the ship also forms a big part of the overall mythology of the island.
this evil dude widmore is buying up loads of artifacts like maps and stuff that were raided from this ship so that he can try and find the island, most of this is revealed during season 3 and 4. more stuff has been explained in the show than not explained, and for the stuff that hasnt been explained, theres still another 2 seasons to tie it up
the network had plenty of confidence in the show being a success, they had 2 of tv’s best writers producing the show, a good ensemble cast plus they forked out more money on a pilot than has ever been spent on a pilot before, and more money by quite some bit.

the island can be moved? a come on! has it got a little engine or something, built by aliens 1 million years ago no doubt. I do like the show but i don’t for a second think that they knew what was gonna happen when they started at the beginning. They didn’t commission 4-5 seasons at the start and the fact that they commissioned a pilot just goes to show that they were treating this like any other show, a show that could easily fail.

I have to agree with butters I’m afraid - the ideas were thought out to begin with by the creators, they may have changed slightly but I think the origonal concept and idea still remains

I’ve been a fan from the start and every episode is cleverly though out and there are always so may little things, such as songs that are playing to books people are reading and the way that everyones lives seems to have crossed before they go to the island.

ah come on, thats called writing. there is no way that they thought the show would be as sucessful as it has been, they may have hoped so but there is now way they could have banked on it. If the show had pulled in less viewers they would have rapped it up after season 1 or 2. Its like proson break, if that had failed to pull in the viewers they would have escaped, the bad guys would have been brought to justice and that would have been that. I’m not knocking Lost, its a good show, but the fact that i would have to watch it every week for a few years ain’t my idea of time well spent.

What was the deal with the black smoke monster thing that was in it a while back, it killed some people.

the network that made the show had every confidence in it, when the original idea was pitched it was pitched with a story arc covering 5 seasons and when it was green lighted it was given an initial 3 series run with a view to extending that. jj abrahms was the main driving force behind the show and the network knew everything this guy touched turned into tv gold.
a network isnt gonna pay 14 million dollars for a pilot without having every confidence and intention of backing consecutive succesful seasons, theyre businessmen/woman at the end of the day and forking out that much money on something they felt could possibly fail is good business acumen.

the smoke monster is the islands security system, it protects the island and some people theorise that it might be the actual soul of the island. ben [or whoever is the chosen protector, now locke] has the ability to summon the smoke monster

ah butters, you have been sucked in by the Lost PR machine, ‘of course Lost was planned for 5 seasons from the beginning’ etc. A pilot is made and showed to a test audience to see if there is an interest in a series being produced, if they had faith in the show they wouldn’t have made a pilot.

Aaron Spelling also made tv gold, hmmm…

Is Lost meant to have some basis in reality? Smoke monsters, movable islands all sounds extremely daft or made up if you will. Script writer: ‘man, i didn’t think the show was going to be this popular, now the tv executives want another 2 seasons!! What am i going to do? I got it! Smoke monsters and movable islands! That’ll us out of a jam, why bother with reality?’.

Its all about the money Butters, all about the money. If they can get another five years out of it they will. I’m guessing its all a dream and the series will end with jj abrahms waking up saying ” i have a fanrtastic idea for a show”
