With record companies attitudes like this - Is it any wonder why everyone just dowloads everything for free?

For crying out loud, promo’s are collecters items, as they have the record label emblam on it. Bootlegs don’t have this.

Well, think about it this way, that’s a bit of tax lost.

The only people that seek to buy promo items are fans of the band - sure there are the record shops / ebay sellers that make a bit of money off it - but for fucks sake…

I think the record companies are clutching at straws here. I can’t see how htey have any legal basis for hteir arguments.

Maybe they are worried that promo copies are sold on eBay prior to release and that’s how albums are getting leaked online.. but I think the vast majority of promo discs sold will be old ones sold to fans that are avid collectors.
Record companies need to realise that the old way of doing things - getting promo copies out there, creating a buzz, getting the record on the radio weeks before release - is dying a death and fans are getting back to word-of-mouth. If the record labels want to make sure enough people are buying their goods, they want to stop pointing the finger and start seriously looking at the quality of what they are selling - right from the standard of the artists and material down to ensuring that packaging (and RE-packaging, remixing, remastering etc ) is of a suitably high standard.
