Rotten slams ‘humourless’ Coldplay

(Monday June 16, 2008 09:45 AM)

The Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten has slammed Coldplay for creating boring music - insisting he feels sorry for fans who pay to see the “humourless” group perform live.

Rocker Rotten, real name John Lydon, is convinced the Yellow hitmakers take themselves too seriously - and is adamant their music suffers as a result.

He says, “I pity the poor b*****s who have to watch them. They are utterly humourless.

“I met them a few years ago, said hello and realised they were just men in anoraks. They looked like a gang of little poncy masturbators.

“There is no fun, they don’t offer joy. Their music has a couple of quite nice tones here and there but it’s a box of tosh sold to slightly inadequate, half-baked people.”

Shame that man is in one of the most overrated bands himself and has to do Hello magazine style tactics for anyone to take notice of him these days.

Haha,

Although I think Rotten has no right to slag off anyone as he has done nothing since 1977, I have to agree as I hate Coldplay with a passion that little folk could equal.

Sooooooooooo boring.

Well I disagree that Lydon’s “done nothing since 1977” (PiL? Come on, surely “Rise” has a place in everyone’s heart…?) but yeah, what you said.

Coldplay have done the odd vaguely likeable song, but they leave me with that feeling you get when you bump into someone you haven’t seen for ages and you say “Yeah, call me, we’ll meet up for a drink!” and as they walk away you think “God, I hope they don’t ring me..What would we talk about? I’m not even sure I like them anyway…”
You feel like you should be nice to them…but you can’t really actually be fucked with it.

He has a point - Chris Martin is humourless. He walked out in a strop from a Radio 4 interview last week.
I find it funny that their new album is trying to be ‘credible’ as well. Getting Brian Eno to produce it, and all the talk beforehand of striving for a Sigur Ros/Arcade Fire sound… yet on their new record they still come across as an over-produced, grandiose sub-U2. French revolution attire and unconventional instruments isn’t going to change that perception.

I don’t think PiL ever broke up, did they? They did at least 10 albums …

Anyway I just thought I should jump in and say I have tons of respect for John Lydon - he’s been through some pretty hellish times and he is always true to himself, he has real integrity and is a genuinely decent human being.

I agree with mrs h actually, I have a hell of a lot of respect for Lydon and he isn’t (just) the loudmouth he is painted as.

My housemate was horrified by the fact that she thought Coldplay’s recent single was ‘quite good’. I agree with Rotten though, it’s all just so bland and samey. Bleugh.

Johnny Rotten is just a very outspoken man and supposed to be quite funny, Coldplay are a bit too serious you know? Their lead vocalist is a boring nobber of an activist. I like gigs that involve the crowd too otherwise they lose their power you know? But hell, that’s just rock ‘n’ roll innit?

i DID like johnny rotten, but he’s become a parody of himself. He could still be a relevent artist and saved all this backbiting for his 60’s, but i think as far as his career is concerend now he’s shot his load. PiL are one of THE vastly underrated bands we ever had, and he could still be doing it. I think its a real shame.
