What exactly is that tense, Sam? It’s a sort of weirdy past future conditional thing that I can’t figure out. And what does “pluperfect” mean?
“If it had been a penis, can you imagine the size it would have been when he was born?” would have sounded better, and that’s the 3rd conditional.
Trust you to spoil Gav and Jess’s good news thread with grammar questions

I’m not spoiling anything I’m just interested. So why 3rd? Is it because it has 3 distinct parts to it, or because it is sort of abstracted away from an ordinary condition by 2 levels of weirdness - like chinese whispers?
You can tell me tomorrow if you like - I’m off to see Babar Luck now :)

The latter:
1st conditional is for possible future events “If I win at pool tomorrow I’ll mock my opponent viciously.” (present simple + will)
2nd conditional is for hypothetical and impossible future events: “If I drank alcohol I would be as pissed as mrs h.” (past simple + would)
3rd conditional is for past hypothetical events: “If I hadn’t wanted to show off my grammar skills, I wouldn’t have bothered typing this reply:” (past perfect + would + present perfect)
€25 please :p

Past perfect simple is had + 3rd form of the verb, PP Continuous is had been + verb+ing
Pluperfect - never heard of it. Doesn’t exist.
There are 3 conditionals, the ones above. Had there been more I would have shown you them (nice use of the 3rd just there) :)

I had a dream earlier in the week that I had to register the baby’s name… and when it came to filling in the form I couldn’t remember what we had agreed… so I wrote down the first thing that came to mind.
I woke myself (& jess) up at half 5 in the morning laughing because I had named my first child ‘Magic Venison’
I’ve only just read that! I think waking up laughing is horrible, because the shock just makes me laugh even more and I always end up truly hysterical.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that that is really sweet - it’s obviously a play on words and you wanted to call it ‘dear’ :)
@Sam - so what is the third form of the verb?
And pluperfect bloody well does exist, I remember it from school. Although now I come to think of it it is possible I remember it from French lessons.

Pluperfect must be French.
The third form of the verb is also known as the past participle or present prefect.

The thing is - as a native speaker you probably weren’t taught this at school. I didn’t have a clue about any of it before I got a job teaching it as a foreign language (and I have a degree in English and half-trained as an English teacher)! Just have a look around the web for beginner grammar stuff. The BBC language section for example :)

I’m pretty sure you are right that I wasn’t taught it at school, but I just assumed that was because I never turned up! I am interested, but we should give this thread back to the baby now and finish it elsewhere :)

20 weeks, that means you know the sex, right?? My friend is having a baby (well it could be any minute) and she’s trying so hard not to tell the baby’s sex, but it’s not working. The funny part is that she doesn’t even notice when she slips up :-).

Aww! Congratulations again, both, she’s beautiful already!! :)
I’ve already knitted her a jumper that says “Orinoco Danger Lobster” on it, but it was quite tricky and won’t fit her until she’s about 18. Provided that she is morbidly obese and has extremely long arms. I might start again … :(
