Changes on the WoM

#

Started by hoochalobster (Sarah) Super Moderator

Hey all

As you may have noticed if you’re viewing the site through therapyquestionmark.co.uk, there have been some changes made to the message boards. These changes aren’t yet final, just a little experimenting for which we would like some feedback!

I’ve read some posts already about the changes, so thanks for those comments. I’d appreciate it if anyone who wants to say they hate (or love!) something could either post it here or email me.

Once we’ve had some feedback then the boards will be changed mainly to go with popular opinion on what is good and bad.

Thanks for your help :)

Sarah

I love the colour scheme, I just think that the page number thing and signatures need putting back in and I’d be a happy lad!

Feedback:
When there is a URL in the message, let it open in a new window and not in it’s own window.

Yeah, I agree, make it open in a new pop-up window, not in the same window.

I agree.

Also, your anti-spam-time-between-postings gap is set at 30 seconds. I have been stung by this a few times when in full flow. I realise why it is there, but unless you have been having specific problems in this area, may I suggest a reduction to 20 seconds?

Alex - I’ve changed the anti-spam-time-between-postings gap to 20 seconds, since there haven’t been any problems related to this in a long time.

The signatures will most likely return (although I haven’t heard that many requests for it yet), and it seems that opening links in new windows is a popular request amongst the people who’ve replied. Any other people who have an opinion on opening links in the same or in a new window?

The ‘direct page’ links will return asap.

New window definately, if the URL’s crap then a quick ‘x’ is more fun than hitting ‘back’, and waiting for the page to load.

Not too bothered about signatures - I don’t mind the one-line sigs, but you see some people (on other boards, I must stress!) with huge paragraphs and even pictures for signatures. And that’s just a pain in the arse to be looking at.

I have installed a new version of the message board software this afternoon to fix some bugs and minor security issues. During this process I have re-introduced the signatures and the direct page links on the thread lisitings.

Re-introducing the signatures does mean that Sarah and I will start enforcing the rule in the guidelines about the maximum length of signatures, as I agree with Alan that the signatures should not clutter up the threads, regardless of the fact that it’s possible to turn the signatures off in your preferences.

My issue with opening links in a new window was that it meant that links to other threads, the guidelines, etc. also opened in a new window, although they are on the same site, which is a big usability no-no in my book.

I’ve solved this by letting links to external pages open in a new window and links to therapyquestionmark.co.uk open in the same window. This may sound easy to do on normal webpages for site-builders amongst you, but since I’m using ‘external’ software for the boards I had to hack the code of that software. Which was fun, though :-)

Let me know if you like the changes. Please contact me if any of you runs into any bugs or weird behaviour of the boards.

One last thing, due to some technical issues with maintaining two interfaces for the messages boards I have removed the Teethgrinder.com interface for the time being. If the current changes are to everyone’s liking and nobody is missing anything from the new interface, the Teethgrinder.com look will probably not return.

Sounds good, I believe signatures should be of a certain length and no more. :-)

I must say I already prefer the new look meassage board. I went on to teethgrinder.com, and was like “Uggh” … I guess I’ve gotten more used to the graphics on this site.

Keep the green, I say!!

I will take Private Messages into consideration, but as they weren’t a part of the Teethgrinder.com interface in the first place it’s not really on-topic, now is it? ;-)

Alan - I know what you mean about the Teethgrinder.om look, I feel the same! Considering the fact that it is my own site, that’s not a good sign ;-)

I take it you’re not married..?

Changes get my thumbs up, but I can’t jump to the latest message on each thread.

Oh we’re never happy for long…

What I did like on the old one, on the front WOM page you could see how many members there are in total (so not the once that are online for that time)… and who’s the last one that subscribed… always nice to know and check them out…

Seems to be fixed now - am busily trying to think of something else to grumble about…

I think I’ve solved the problem with the disappearing arrow-signs to jump to the latest message on a thread. Please let me know if it occurs again in the future, or if you think of something else to grumble about :-)

penn - I agree, but by having them both people will be able to choose which one they prefer.

On a side-note, to prevent a lot of titles on a thead-overview page from ‘breaking’ when there are direct-page-links following it, the titles are being cut off at a certain length if they are too long. If you hold your mouse pointer over the title, it will show the full title.

I’ve also made some changes to the preferences page, to make it a bit easier to use (at least, that’s what I tried to do). I will be tweaking some more of the interface here and there to make it more user-friendly. Just give me a shout if any of you think otherwise!
