I gave Death Magnetic a few spins over the weekend, and I must say it’s far better than St. Anger. However I didn’t get the feeling I was listening to a CD, but more to a compilation of ideas squized together in ‘songs’. That’s a pity, since it’s got some brillliant ideas… it just isn’t finished.
There isn’t one song on it which I think sounds great, simply because every track is full of filler, it’s clear they don’t want to make short tracks even though they didn’t have inspiration… The bridges are long and boring or the different ideas don’t suit together I one song… Why a long boring track if you only have 3 minutes worth of good stuff? And why does a song like “All Nightmare Long” have 2 intro’s? They’re both great, but don’t suit well together IMO…
However, it’s far better than I expected after watching the crap performance they gave on Later with Jools Holland.

Can’t comment on the quality, my stereo broke down and only listened to it in the car.

I think Broke Beat Scarred is one of the few tracks that sounds like a complete song all the way through and doesn’t have riffs that are put there just to make the song longer! That one has grown on me, still trying with the rest.

This morning on the train I was listening to the remaster of “Wake up dead” by Megadeth which was followed by “My Apocalypse” off of Death Magnetic. How is it that a 2004 remaster of an 80s tune can sound way better that a mainstream, multi-million release from 2008!!!??? I was shocked.

They should continue releasing their albums for video games.

Before I get backlash from the fanboys I just want to say that I think that their are two great tunes and some good moments on the album. Consider this constructive criticism as you will have to admit that the album simply sounds crap. I went online and signed the petition to have this remastered.

I wouldn’t bother with the petition, to be honest.

There’s no way they’re going to redo the album - they’d end up with thousands of returned CD’s that’d cost them a fortuneto replace.

Lars has commented on the sound quality of his new album and has defended it. No remix will be forthcoming.

He is so full of denial and shit at the same time, kind of like in his opinion towards the sound quality of St. Anger. AJFA did not influence bands due its sound quality, but due to the songs. Rick Rubin’s interpretation of Slipknot did not sound that shite. The more I think about it, the more I bet that Lars himself personally turned up the dialls…

No surprises in that interview - he sold his records, so why should her care about the fans who he has been screwing over for over 10 years now.

There IS a certain In Your Face quality about the recording, a rawness blah blah blah but I still maintain that such a feel can (and has, many times by other bands) be captured without fuckloads of clipping.

I am far from an audiophile, but I have listened to enough music over the years to know that DM is wrong. Listenable, and far from the disaster some folk are making out it is, but wrong nonetheless.

Agreed on all points. DM is cool but clippy in parts, particularly on headphones, and Lars Ulrich is still a supercilious blowhardy knobweed. :-)

I keep thinking that’s what he’s singing in The End Of The Line, but surely Hetfield can’t be that shit a lyricist?

“New consequence machine…you burn through all your gasoline” Not much better, is it? ;-) Yeah, I wasn’t thinking Hetfield was gonna reclaim any lyrical prowess with DP; I reckon the last good lyric he wrote all the way through was The God that Failed. But I enjoy the album overall anyway.

I’m just wondering why there isnt much love for The Black Album? Do alot of you actually think songs like Sad But True , Wherever I May Roam , Of Wolf And Man , Through The Never , Holier Than Thou… Fucking hell the whole album is a masterpiece. Ok it was a more commercial album but for straight up hard rock/heavy metal it surely is one of the best of all time? I love master , ride and justice but TBA would be up there with them every time.

I agree.

But, Of Wolf and Man, despite being musically heavy in a cool Maiden way, has got to be the most asinine lyric ever written. My only problem with “Metallica,” or TBA, or whatever you crazy kids are calling these days, is when I first heard it, I felt it sounded way over-produced (how many Hetfields does it take to complete a harmony?) and thought the lyrics had been penned by vacuous primates. But I rather like it now. ;-)

Excuse me, but you’re a Maiden fan and have a problem with the lyrics to “Of Wolf And Man”? That’s weird.

(And just to be clear about that: I like Maiden, too)

RoyBatty (Steve) wrote:

Sorry to be weird, then. :) Maiden, at their worst, (think: Can I Play With Matches) don’t even come close to the lyrical inanity that is Of Wolf And Man. And just to be clear: “I hunt / Therefore I am / Harvest the land / Taking of the fallen lamb” (Descartes rolls around in frilly grave). And lest we forget: “I feel a change / Back to a better day / Hair stands on the back of my neck / In wildness is the preservation of the world / So seek the wolf in thyself” (followed by obligatory, ginormous were-Het-thing bellowing). Good God.

I don’t have a problem with the lyrics; they’re problematic on their own. ;-)
