ah,sorry if I may have appeared rude on my previous answer…But I used to know same situation as Tijn did in the past so reading ,that at first ,made me on my nerves …Well,Tijn, at first ,you could try to speak to your colleague and make him understand in a friendly way that all is about work and he should stop drinking at workplace and your shoulders can’t stand for all the tasks.

No - I meant isn’t Punkwak in the military… I wasn’t having a go at you Evilbeast!

I’m sure I read in a previous post he had been deployed somewhere really dangerous and was getting shot at… If that is the case and a colleague is ‘hitting the bottle’ its not really a good situation to be in if this guy is supposed to be watching his back.

Then again he could work as a traffic warden - if so, I hope he gets all he deserves :D

Evilbeast makes a good point. I’d tell your workmate you have a problem with the way he is acting before going to the boss - People with alcohol problems dont usually think they have a problem or bother about the way it affects the people around them - maybe a quiet word explaining things from your point of view might make him think about what he is doing.

He probably doesn’t realise that he is causing you hassle. If he continues after you talk to him then go to your boss.

If they are good employers they will try to help him with his situation - if they are bad ones they’ll sack his drunken arse! Either way you won’t have to carry the burden.

I would normally agree with Gav, but to be honest if he is having DTs at work then his alcohol problem is already out of control. I think the guy is going to end up getting sacked whatever you do.

I wish I knew the answer to this one.

We have a friend who is struggling with an alcohol problem. It’s dead easy from the outside to say “do this” or “do that” but of course he just agrees with what we say, tells us what we want to hear and lies to us so we don’t feel let down when he has a drink.

:( A very sad situation.

Be as goos a friend to him as you can, as in listen to his problems etc , but don’t be tempted to think that as a friend you can’t drop him in trouble with his employers or you can’t tell him what he’s doing is out of order. Sometimes being a good friend involves being a bastard, but for the right reasons…

Should read:

“tell him to stop harrassing you whilst you’re busy trying to do his job and get some real mates to moan at”

Apart from that you were doing ok :p
