As there are only a few weeks left of any albums getting released that aren’t shitty Christmas Comps put together by Dennis i thought i would post this now so people can at least think about it. Usual thing of your Fave albums of the year, but i’m also interested what film and best gig if you have one. If possible try and limit the albums to five and one worthy mention, so we don’t just have a huge list.

1.Radioactive man - growl
2.Opeth- Watershed
3.Melvins- Nude In Boots
4.The Music- Strength In Numbers
5.Nick Cave- Dig Lazarus Dig
Worthy mention
Primal Scream- Beautiful future… just because it was such a upbeat album and i played it a lot.

Gig of the year was Carcass easily.
and the best film i was this year was either Taken or Burn after reading.

To be honest, I didn’t think 2008 was a great year album wise. But here we go:

1) Atlas Sound - Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel
2) of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping
3) Nine Inch Nails - The Slip

I’d been really looking forward to The Mountain Goats and Xiu Xiu releases but was disappointed by both. My discovery of the year (ie not released in ‘08) would be ‘You in Reverse’ by Built to Spill (2006).

Movies (I’m really struggling to remember what I saw - don’t think it was a great year for movies either!):

1) No Country for Old Men (was released in the UK in ‘08)
2) In Search of a Midnight Kiss (again, was released in the UK in ‘08)
3) Batman - Dark Knight

Worst films were Indiana Jones Crystal Skull and The Happening (I think The Happening is actually the worst film I’ve *ever* seen).

Gigs:

1) Dead Meadow
2) Fuck Buttons
3) An evening with Daniel Johnston and friends

The best book I read in 2008 was Child of God by Cormac McCarthy (but I think it was published in the 70s). Best 2008 book was God’s Own Country by Ross Raisin.

gojira - the way of all flesh
testament - formation of damnation
the hollow earth theory - rise of agartha
feeder - silent cry
coldplay - viva la vida

film of the year is - taken.

worst film is - meet the spartans

best gig was either bloodstock or download.

Out of about 70 albums I have bought this year, there are no more than 7 maximum that came out this year!

I am Back Catalogue Man…

Soulfly - Conquer (good stuff)
Metallica - Death Magnetic (Again, good, solid, if not genius)
Motorhead - Motorizer (gone a bit luke warm on me at the moment, but I liked it when it came out)
Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone
ACDC - Black Ice

Yeah, MAJOR shocks from Mr Ennis there…

I think I only saw one film this year…oh wait.. Did the U23D film come out this year? If so, that is easily my favourite, if not then it has to be the Indiana Jones one by default - as it’s the only other film I have seen!

Gig of the year has to be Down, which I expect would be gig of the year ANY year I see them.
Slayer were very good, Motorhead tomorrow are bound to be their usual, reliable selves…I am hoping 2009 will be a better year for gigs, to be honest.

Unusually, I will have to argue with Gimme about the Ginger album - I thought it was OK when I first heard it, but I haven’t been able to bring myself to listen to it for months and months.

I think I might have been wrong in the first place, and it’s actually rubbish.

AS for GOOD albums, I’m struggling a bit to be fair, I don’t think anything has really taken me this year.

I’ve seen some good gigs - WIldhearts Earth Vs Show, Airbourne, Terrorvision, Monster Magnet.

What I would like to point out to the world at large, is that I have been to more Terrorvision gigs in the last 5 years than Therapy? gigs, and Terrorvision have been split up for 7 years. When’s the UK tour chaps?

I think the band said they’re avoiding the places the usually play until the next album as they wanted to focus on playing new places. and you cant fault them on the ‘new’ places they’ve played recently.

Best gig was Rancid last thursday , it was up there as one of the best gigs i’ve ever been too. Oasis were good to be fair, Maiden’s set was amazing but was a bit of an anti climax. Hopefully seeing Tyla next month aswell.

Albums ? , I’ve hardly bought any new releases this year
Metallica - Death Magnetic , Decent
Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone, Excellent probably the best of the year for me
Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul , Good.
Weezer - Red Album , First 3 songs are amazing , the rest isn’t upto much. Disappointing

Supersuckers new album came out today , still waiting for it to arrive.

Film, The Dark Knight as its the only new film i’ve seen , good but not all I’d hoped for.

:D , yeah it’s out today, I ordered it off amazon for £9.99 with a bonus dvd. Should be good , there albums are consistantly good.

It’s the first album in ages that I haven’t downloaded before buying , It should be awesome to actually listen to a cd quality album rather than an mp3.

I saw them support Foo Fighters about 13 years ago in Leeds…they got really arsey because people were booing and throwing plastic pint glasses at them…the singer said he was mates with Dave Grohl and would have a word with him not to play if it carried on :D

Music wise, AC/DC Black Ice and Metallica Death Magnetic.
Films, I honestly don’t think i saw anything new this year. Not into Batman or Indiana Jones films, so didn’t bother with them.
Best gig i saw this year would have to be The Gutter Twins at Glasgow Oran Mor

I agree. Still, I was falling in love with WEEZER again for a bit.

I liked the albums by FLEET FOXES, MGMT and OKKERVIL RIVER that came out this year.

GINGER’s album was quite good, as was “Diamond Hoo Ha” by SUPERGRASS.

“Hey Venus!” by SFA was released last year, wasn’t it? If it was 2008 it’s high up on this year’s list. What about RADIOHEAD’s “In Rainbows”? Did that come out in 2007?

Let’s see, what else?

METALLICA’s and AC/DC’s recent album left me cold.

PAUL WELLER’s “22 Dreams” was quite good. I really liked ELVIS COSTELLO’s “Momofuko”. ROBERT FORSTER’s “The Evangelist” was okay, as were BRIAN WILSON’s “Lucky Old Sun” and NICK CAVE’s “Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!”.

The last albums by BECK, MERCURY REV, PORTISHEAD, TV ON THE RADIO and CALEXICO weren’t convincing enough for me to return to them repeatedly.

Oh, and has anybody mentioned the shitfest that was JUDAS PRIEST’s “Nostradamus”?

The SCARS ON BROADWAY album started promising, but got a few songs into the album.

KINGS OF LEON… well, it’s okay. Doesn’t blow me away, though.

That’s all I can think of at the moment.
