“post-hardcore”

#

Started by stooboy

Hello boys and girls. It’s been a while since I was last here, but I like some help.

I know genres are a bit shitty and wishy washy, but whilst reading up on Fugazi on wikipedia a few weeks ago, I discovered that some of my favourite bands listening to for years, are in fact “post-hardcore”. Bands like Quicksand, Fugazi, Helmet, Hell is for Heroes, Hundred Reasons, At the Drive in, Fighstar, Funeral for a Friend, Hot Water Music, Rival Schools, Understand (anyone remember them?).

Anyway, I’m wondering if anyone can recommend any other stuff in a similar vein? I’m desperate to discover some new stuff.

Cheers everyone

Stew

My favourite band in that category would have to be Farside, I highly recommend their album ‘Rigged’ :)

On rereading it occurred to me that you might mean ‘new’ as in ‘recent’ - Farside are well old, FYI!

Get Entertainment! by Gang of Four - it’s a classic album that inspired a lot of post hardcore bands. Plus their guitarist is producing Therapy?’s new album

I’ve been using Last.fm to try and find some similar bands. So far I’ve found Faraquet and Medications. I’ve heard a couple of Drive Like Jehu songs, I’ll have another listen. A band I’ve just come across is Polar bear Club, sound very Hot Water Music-esque. i checked out Farside, but the songs on their myspace page didn’t impress

Oh, that’s a shame :( I can’t access myspace at work so I dunno what’s up there. Try find Wait for Monday or Silver Anniversary if you can.

Last.fm also has Schtum tagged as post-hardcore. They only did one album I think, ‘Grow’. I really liked it.

JAWBREAKER

Greatest band ever. Although technically they are punk, I can’t imagine a Hotties fan not getting into Jawbreaker! See what you think. If you prefer something grittier try Jawbox instead :)

Also I agree with Hooch, you should look a bit closer at Farside - I don’t know what’s on their Myspace, but Rigged is a great album.

There are so many bands fitting into that genre:
Sot Baker, Shorebirds, The Don Ramos Players, Banner Pilot, Bridge & Tunnel, Able Baker Fox, LaGrecia, The Tim Version, Off With Their Heads, In The Red, The Sainte Catherines, Fucked Up.

I personally prefer more punked up music in the veins of Leatherface:
Milloy, The Great St. Louis

If you like Jawbox and other Dischord stuff, you could do a lot worse than Bluetip. Big influence on Hundred Reasons. Also Handsome if you can get hold of their album (considering the other bands you mentioned you might already have it).

Throat fit into that general category, I think. And maybe Reuben?

Fugazi are not bad - I like the ” argument ” album. To me it’s the most listenable album - although ” Arpeggiator ” is a top tune from an earlier album. Too bad the band are all dead boring ! the instrument dvd is not exactly a barrel of laughs ! :)

Fugazi inspired my band in the old days. Lots of atonal riffs and odd time signatures :)

Didn’t the Wonderstuff reform?

Yeah, i’ve only got one of their albums, Steady diet of nothing, and its fucking ace. I’ve only ever seen footage of them live on youtube and they do look pretty dull.
