NIRVANA overrated?!

#

Started by nice guys

For quite a long time now I’ve been thinking about the status of NIRVANA in the music industry and I think that they are completely overrated.

I mean, what have they reached? They’ve produced one or two good and successful albums, they’ve had Kurt Cobain, but that’s it.

What they’ve done is nothing compared to the legend of Nirvana. In my eyes, they would not have been able to produce another album reaching the quality of Nevermind or Incesticide. Never ever! They were through, weren’t they?

To express it clearly: Committing suicide was the only chance for Cobain to make Nirvana a legend! It would have gone down with the following albums!

Any other opinions? :P

I like them, they’ve put out some great records, but the legend thing is a bit overrated indeed.
I think even if Kurt Cobain would still be alive they would no longer exist.
But all the talk you hear nowadays that he’d be killed is a bit ridiculous, especially when you know that he tried to commit suicide a few monhts before he died.

I remember when I first heard Nirvana and I finally thought they were gonna play metal ‘n stuff. It turned out to be ‘grunge’.
I always liked Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden far more than Nirvana…the latter two were far more depressing/dark and Pearl Jam wrote some major gems…so I never understood the big thing Nirvana was/is.
But they were already big before he killed himself. I guess it was the attidude or something that gotten a lot of kids to like them…and most songs were real fuckin’ catchy. Poppy almost.
I think most die-hard nirvana fans were very young and it was probably the first ‘heavy rock’ they heard.
And after 1994 it became a legend really.
But I still can’t listen to Bleach.

Although nowadays I prefer Soundgarden and Alice in Chains more, as someone mentioned above.

You just gotta give Nirvana credits for making a huge contribution to the rock scene. In my eyes, they wrote rock history with Nevermind, a timeless classic album. They were pretty much the first grunge band to break through, weren’t they? If it wasn’t for Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and the likes, rock music wouldn’t be the same if you ask me.
So no, they are not overrated, they deserve the credits!

yeah. They changed the music scene and brought grunge to the forefront. Before Nirvana it wasn’t really that big and then MTV started playing Smells Like Teen Spirit and they broke the way for more grunge bands.
It was a big thing. That’s what the 90s were about.

what nice guys is saying is totally stupid. nirvana released the most classic album of the 90’s and changed the music scene forever. and they accomplished that with only 3 albums in a 4 year span. what is more important though, is the number of kids who got into rock music thanx to nirvana. a whole generation (including me) grew up listening
to lithium, blew, dive, stay away, heart shaped box and all the other nirvana anthems. so when you refer to them show a little more respect
or else do not talk about nirvana at all.

Again it’s all about opinions - in my opinion, ‘Superunknown’ by Soundgarden was the best album of the 90’s. I’ve always liked Nirvana, but if I listen to them too much I tend to lose interest. Yet, I never tire of listening to Soundgarden.

The mainstream picked up Nirvana a lot more though, so Soundgarden tended to be forgotten. People don’t seem to remember either that Soundgarden released albums well before Nirvana, Pearl Jam etc…

Nirvana over-rated? Maybe.

Soundgarden under-rated? Definately

That’s my two cents anyway.

Superunknown is such an amazing album. VERY underrated.
Besides that Soundgarden started way earlier than Nirvana.
And Chris Cornell has like the best rock voice ever.
Rooaar…I also enjoy Dirt by AIC.

in some way they are totaly overrated. it just makes me laugh if some 14 year ols kid with a kurt t-shirt runs around saying that nirvana we’re such great musicians. absolutly hilarious. but they definatly had a huge impact on the music scene, positive and negative. i don’t think that half of us would know t? without them, because when everyone was looking for rockbands with songs that were heavy and popy at one time, t? were there with troublegum. but then again, we wouldn’t have to listen to limp bizkit all the time on mtv if it wasn’t fot nirvana.
in my eyes, nirvana was a lousy band with just a hand full of good songs but a briliant marketing.

And besides, when you think about it, everything can be brought back to the ramones, they were the last real important band in music, they changed it all.

Nirvana are going to be overrated due to Kurt’s suicide - look at all the rock’n’roll monkies that have died (was Lennon really that much better than McCartney?), but you don’t see the other 2 band members trading on their legacy that much. WHat is overrated is Courtney Love’s rise to fame after Kurt’s death - one reasonably good album to her name and yet she’s one of the most famous women in rock today. Go figure

Overrated? no. Think about how they really changed the music scene. What was popular right before Nirvana came out swingin? Right Said Fred, Color Me Badd and many other o’ Crappy bands. The thing I remember that was most different was the distortion off distortion on switch up in most of the songs. Bands just simply didn’t do this. I don’t belive Nirvana would still be around today if Kurt wasn’t dead. I think he was going to quit the music biz before he was murdered. Yep I said it, Murdered. Nirvana are overrated as hell. They’re an average band who ripped off other bands quite blatantly. Come As You Are was a complete and utter rip-off of a Killing Joke song called Eighties, download it and see for yourself. I attribute their success to being there at the right time, being able to market well to the masses and the fact Kurt can now be seen as some demi-god by all the faux-depressed teens of today.

You start about nirvana being overrated while there are many more fuck tards that don’t deserve their status. I’m mainly talking about Sid Vicious here. That guy didn’t write music or lyrics. In fact he was so terrible, that the sex pistols quickly recorded Never Mind The Bollocks withe a different bass player when sid was sick. And the he died.
Even more important: You shoulld wonder what would have happened if rock stars lived on:

Jimi Hendrix could be the equivalent of santana.

What if instead of lennon, McCartny would have died? I’m pretty sure Macca would have been considered the genious.

Same goes for Mick Jagger (or Richards, for that matter). He should have died right after the release of Start Me Up. He would have been the biggest ever.

Last but not least: IN UTERO ROCKS! If you can’t call that the confirmation of Kurt’s talent, you’re an idiot. Take SLTS away from Nevermind and In Utero kicks its ass…

Sorry - never got nirvana. just an average yank band that seemd to get more attention than they deserved. let’s face it, the song’s weren’t great, were they. Foo fighters are a much better band. who’d have thought the drummer would turn out to be such a great songwriter?

Sorry Arvid,

Which bit didn’t you like -‘average’ or ‘yank’?

Nirvana are obviously one of your favourites, but i really don’t get it - not even the lyrics, I’m afraid.

If you want a real rock legend - music, lyrics and even a tragic suicide - go to Joy Division. Nirvana don’t even come close.

PS don’t know why Nirvana never got sued for that Killing Joke rip-off. Never heard a more blatant steal.

In terms of column inches over the years, the NME reckoned they were the most important band of all time. The were okay and did start off the whole ‘Manchester sound’ thing (unless someone can tell me otherwise), but I can’t say they were that wonderful. Doves are a much better Manc band (and the Roses/Oasis for that matter), so the Smiths were definitely overrrated.

Carter USM - now they were vastly UNDERRATED!
