Audio Software Advice Needed

#

Started by Dennis (Dudley Less)

Looking for recommendations for a cheap software package that can do the following:

Convert WAV and WMA files to MP3.
Allow me to “see” tracks on the screen and edit/ cut and paste sections/ fade in/ out etc.

basically, it’s for a mate who wants to take live recordings of his band, stick them on his PC and then be able to upload them to MySpace/ Facebook etc - he’ll need to be able to take a continuous recording of a gig and cut it into songs and then cut the songs up again to make a medley, that kind of thing. He WON’T need to be able to change pitch/ key/ temp or anything like that - he’d not looking to polish tracks up or improve them, just to be able to chop them up and stick them together in various ways to make it easier to use them online.

He’s used Nero 5 in the past but has read negative reviews of the latest edition.

I use WaveLab myself at work but I have no idea how much it is - probably a lot pricier than he needs cos it does lots more than he needs.

Any suggestions?

The best (free) conversion tool I’ve used is CDeX http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/

I’ve used nero in the past to edit / chop & cut wav files before and to be honest - its really basic, but thats all I needed. I cant remember the latest version I used cause I haven’t done it in a while.

I’d recommend Audacity, too. I use it myself, and I’ve heard from several people that it’s actually better than a lot of the software you can pay for.

Oh, and there’s another (free) program called something like Audacity Recovery, that can recover Audacity files (well duh) if anything goes wrong before you have the chance to click ‘save’.

I just noticed that Gav’s link was for sourceforge, and I’m sure that’s where I first got Audacity. Maybe it’s been rebranded!

What’s wrong with yours Becca?

That can only improve things for Dennis’ ‘band’, I’m sure. Also I’ve an idea in my head that Dennis uses a Mac. I’m sure Dan once said that he had a pretty decent machine but Dennis had a flasher mac ;)

Anyhow I have never had a problem with Audacity. So to speak.

I use Audacity too it’s good for the simple stuff but for the more advanced stuff I used to use Cool Edit(on my old computer that died a death last year) it’s pricey but excellent

Sourceforge is just a hosting site where a lot of small / shareware / freeware software can be downloaded from.

Many thanks. My mate has checked out Audacity and it seems to do everything he needs, and with it being free he is a very happy chappie.
