Laptop advice

Started by CS (Colin S)

Alright folkes,

As I’m starting uni this september I feel like treating myself to a new laptop. Budget is around £450, and I’m open to either Mac’s or Microsoft Windows.
I’m currently using an HP DV6000 laptop, running on Vista Home Premium which is good (apart from the annoying sidebar). I’ve also had a bit of trouble (with my school’s Mac’s) opening PDF files, although I’m sure there is downloadable software to ‘fix’ that.
I know the budget’s low and I probably won’t get a Mac for that, but what the hell!

I would recommend budgeting in a spare battery or a larger capacity battery, as I always find the short battery life on laptops is annoying.

Sorry, that’s nowt to do with anything is it?! :)

That budget seems pretty good to me, you may stretch to a MAC but it will either be second hand or reconditioned/refurbished. A good site to check, although there’s nothing in your price range at present:

If you find good deals I can give you a heads up on whether they’re any good or not - all I’ll say is though whatever you buy make sure you purchase it on a credit card so your transaction is insured. So many companies are going under at the moment it’s untrue.

We use Dell computers where I work, the Inspiron range they do (for home/personal use) are very sturdy and well spec’d for the money. It’d check the Dell site if you can’t find a MAC, they come with a flavour of Unix now (which is free) if you want away from Microsoft

I’ve a couple of Dell inspirons - they are pretty decent machines.

If its not exactly urgent - I’d recomend checking http://www.hotukdeals.com/ pretty regularly.

Offers from Dell, ebuyer etc… are posted on there - plus you can tell how good of a deal you are getting by the heat rating of the deal - people discuss the spec in the comments section too.

Have a look!

Cheers for the links lads, my school also has a special account with PC World, where they get things slightly cheaper, might ask if they can slip a wee laptop in with their next order if I pay for my bit.

I’d fuck PC World off for a start - thats the best bit of advice you could follow ;)

I looked at them on play. Decent enough specs for what they are, but this is the biggest one

The screen is only 10”. On the upside, it’s XP and not Vista. Dunno if it’s any help but there are a few on Play with all the specs and stuff.

PCWORLD, they charge you like 30 quid to install ram or a new hard drive which is not a difficult process at all, its pretty much as simple as opening up your pcs case and clipping the ram in, or plugging 2 leads into your new hard drive and maybe moving the jumper.

is MSI a decent, reliable name? As for the specs, I never paid attention in GCSE ICT (still got a D! - that’s without much coursework..), so that’s a bit of a mystery to me!

Grant, PC World can indeed be a pain in the bollox.. the dad got me this laptop from the USA when there was a decent exchange rate.. not happening so much now.

To be honest I’ve never heard of MSI. I’d recommend the Compaq one, but it’s a wee bit dearer and the hard drive is only half the size of the other one. I’ve got a Compaq laptop though and it’s been very reliable. I did get the blue screen of death a lot when it was quite new but it took me a while to realise that this was because I had it sitting on my bed all day when it was switched on, and it was overheating. Oops!

That’s the Compaq one, and there’s a favourable review of it if you scroll down a bit.

Colin - if you purchase a laptop from PC world, discount or not you will be paying over the odds for a similar if not better spec’d laptop available online.

As Gav says, ebuyer.com or Dell are very good recommendations for places to start looking - just remember try to use a credit card :)

I’ve got an E-Systems laptop, PC World’s own. I only use it to type my drafts and nothing else, but if I wanted to make my own short films, enhance photos etc, I would’ve bought one that nears four figures (and with the software…well, they’re not something you can download, is it?)

For reliability you can’t beat a Toshiba. Good one is a Toshiba L300 - 250gb HD, 4gb memory, dual core, and all the usual wireless guff. Value for money would probably be Acer T3400. Think its about £400.

If you make sure the battery doesn’t get lazy you can basically work away a whole day without recharge.

No you’ve completely misunderstood me Colin, my point is any transaction above £100 purchased using a credit card is automatically insured under the ‘goods and sales’ act. This means if you bought a laptop lets say on Wednesday, and the company you bought it from went into administration (bust) on the Thuirsday beofer they ship you your laptop but they have taken your money, then you could claim the money back from the credit card company.

You have the cash so the balance could be paid off the credit card as soon as you get the laptop
