I find that my idea of extensive education about, and blanket availability of, contraception tends to get incredulous looks off people who think I’m some kind of fascist. I just feel that all the money they’re pumping into aiding 3rd world countries could be more effectively spent on preventing families having 10+ kids, rather than pumping money into the bottomless pit that it takes to very occasionally feed the starving. It seems to me that the kids 20 years ago being saved through meagre food rashons(?), are living long enough to have their own kids who are in turn being born into the same poverty and suffering. Surely diverting the cash into contraception and sex education would be more worthwhile in the long run? I realise it’s a hardline approach, but I think the prevention is better than the cure.
Maybe in the relative short term (50 years?), a dual approach of food aid as well as contraception/education could be the answer. Maybe my views are draconian and mis-informed, but that’s the way I feel. Maybe I’ve no grasp of the complexities of this situation. In that regards, feel free to flame me! It’s still just my opinion though, and I’m entitled to it :-)
You make a really good point, but sadly it isn’t as simple as that - these families don’t have pensions or anything to help them get by when they are old, they have to rely on their children to care for them as best they can when they are no longer able to travel for water etc. Sadly a large proportion of the children don’t make it through to their 5th birthday, let alone adulthood, so people have more and more children in the hope that 1 or 2 of them might survive. It’s an absolutely disgusting state of affairs, and i the world were to put the amount of money they pay footballers in a year into treating sick and starving children then a few years down the line contraception might become a big part of the solution. But for now that isn’t really a viable option.

Well what would the poor footballers do for a start? How are they expected to get cornrows, idiotic tattoos, and granny sex if you take their money from them?
