Having never been a fan, and not really “getting” them when they played the Unholy Alliance last year, I strangely felt the need to buy the new Mastodon album with the DVD..and I am very glad I did.

Really interesting album, and the DVD is great. Guarantee I’ll end up bloody buying the rest of their stuff in the next couple of weeks…

I found them quite hard to get into - My Bro had Leviathon when it came out but I found the whole Moby Dick thing offputting.

Then when Blood Mountain came out I saw a bit of the DVD and it had them playing in the studio and it was shit hot - I checked out that album and loved it.

The new one is really good too - a lot more comercial sounding. They are pretty fucking good live too!

That’s what really did it for me, seeing them playing live in the studio on the Crack The Skye DVD. Proper tight as a mosquito’s tweeter.

So, Mastodon fans, I gather that the latest offering is the least heavy and most straightforwardly commercial (relatively speaking) so can someone describe the other albums, in particular Leviathon and Blood & Thunder, and which should be my next essenial purchase…?

Blood and Thunder is a track of Leviathon. Blood Mountain is the album.

I’d get Blood Mountain and work backward - That way Leviathan isn’t as big of a style jump. The vocals are a lot more shouty/agressive the earlier back you go.

The drummer is fucking spot on!

Yes, me being thick - I meant Blood Mountain

drummer is indeed spot on - I think the level of musicianship in the band in general is pretty damn impressive.

Will take your advice then and work basckwards, cheers for the recommendation ;)

Blood Mountain - Crack The SKye but more song based and heavier / shoutier

Leviathan - More stripped down but with heavier songs even than blood mountain - less singing - has a a 13 minute song also - Ties with first place with Crack the Skye for me

Remission - Properly Heavy throughout. Almost no singing - almost all Drop A Tuning. Contains the absolute classics ” march of the fire ants ” ” Burning Man ” and ” Mother Puncher ”

Call of the Mastodon - Heavy heavy heavy !!

:D

Mastodon are very hit and miss with me.

Live they are either absolutely fantastic or totally shite-arse bad.

Their albums are good but don’t really float my boat. Well! Lets just say I don’t get them as much as other do.
A lot of people see them as the new Messiahs…!!!

But that being said! I much prefer the direction they’re taking.
Each album is getting more and more appealing to these ears.

dennis - when you do, check out the song Sleeping Giant, one of the most melodic Mastodon tracks ever, starts off melodic and epic then it gets heavier towards the end, and it features probably the hardest drum fill ive heard Brann Dailor do, i cant even do it, youll know which one i mean ;)

Well impressed with the drummer dude, have to say.

Is the DVD worth getting - Workhorse Chronicles..? Could be a good way for a late-comer like me to catch up

I never got to see them support Tool (barely made it to the venue in time to see Tool themselves!) so Mastodon continued to pass me by.

Then I was playing pool in a bar last week when a song came on the jukebox. It sounded to me like a perfect hybrid of Soundgarden and Tool (in fact I wasn’t sure if it might not have been a song by one of those two bands). I rushed over to the player as the song was ending just in time to find out that the song was Oblivion by Mastodon. So I checked out Crack The Skye, and I think it’s f**king great! First new “heavy” band I’ve got into in years :-)

I first heard them in 2004 when Leviathan came out - I was stunned. It sounded so fresh. Like Metallica covering Nirvana almost. Hearts Alive is a big favourite on that album.
