Anyone got 21st Century Breakdown? Any thoughts? Can’t say I’m terribly enraptured with it

I have it. I started off thinking it was good, but probably not one of their best. A few songs in Act 1 and the first track of Act 2 I thought were quite weak.

However, after a few listens, those “weak” tracks grew on me, and the album as a whole has become my favourite Green Day album (surpassing Warning and Dookie) and one of my favourite albums by any band. It’s just great music, great song writing. And it’s back to Green Day doing what they do best, after the slightly disappointing (though still good) American Idiot.

I’m sure it’s not for everyone, but I’d definitely recommend giving it several listens as I think it’s a grower.

I haven’t heard it yet but as my misses is still a fairly big fan I was thinking about getting it for her - If it’s anything like the last album though, all the songs will get played to death and I’ll never want to hear it again. I loved Dookie when I was 15, but when tracks from it come up on my iPod now I just skip them now, it’s the same with their other albums as well.

I don’t know what it is about Green Day, they get older, but they’re fans don’t seem to.

I put dookie on the other week - and its a brilliant album and I played it to death, after a long break from it it sounded great again (bit like how we were describing Troublegum in one of the other threads)

As much as I like them, they’re not the sort of band that I put things aside and make way to buy first thing when in a shop. I’ll buy the new album, but not just yet

I love the new album. It takes a few listens but it slowly grows on you. Plus the production is lovely. My fave song at the moment is East Jesus Nowhere.

Had another listen and it sounds 50% like American Idiot - i.e. a re-hash, and 50% new but not particularly enticing. I’ll persevere, but not that impressed. Seeing them in November, so hoping it grows…

I couldnt finish the new album, i got bored about 5 tracks in, same old same old really.

I dont see where all the fuss comes from, at their peak they were a decent band, never a groundbreaking band like everyone makes out. wow they had a vague narrative running through their last album and everyone proclaiming it this great concept album.

I have no idea why people are comparing it to American Idiot. If anything it’s more like Warning.

And it amuses me that people throw words like “re-hash” around with bands they don’t like, but presumably (on this board) people wouldn’t say Semi-Detached was a re-hash of Troublegum, etc. Nothing wrong with keeping some aspects of your music the same in different albums, almost every band in the world does.

If I had to try and categorise the styles on 21st Century Breakdown, I’d say 30% Wanring, 10% Dookie, 10% American Idiot and 50% new. After all, this album is mainly “power-pop” or “alternative rock”, which they haven’t really done before (the closest to power-pop being Warning).

I guess people would only have been happy if they completely changed styles and did a retro, 80s-sounding synth punk hybrid. Oh, wait, they did that as The Network.

to be fair to them they never really changed their sound to get famous or anything, its been the same formula for 20 years

i think i just got sick of hearing them during the american idiot days

they were far too overplayed

Average Green Day album. As Squall said, Know Your Enemy is weak compared to the rest of them. There would have had much better choices for first single.
Some great and harder punk tracks are Murder City and Horseshoes And Handgrenades-

My girlfriend likes it but its really not growing on me, and I’m really not that fussed about giving it the chance to do so either. The last Offspring one was much better.

Oh dear! Fuck me they are terrible now! 21 Guns is the worst song they have ever written - unless youre a 14 year old emo just getting into rock. Even Avril Lavigne songs have heavier production than that lame excuse for a chart topping power ballad!

Words cannot describe how much I hate Green Day these days so please forgive my rantings but i need to vent my frustration somewhere!

When punk returned from the dead in the early nineties everyone said how it wasn’t even real punk anymore…it was a watered down pop version. Another 15 years later and look at the state of things now…a band as lame as Green Day are rich upper class morons with nothing to say; but the young kids of today have revised history so these pathetic excuses for musicians are now the rebellious punk stars they want them to be and that just makes me want to cry, people.

Look at American Idiot… Billie Joe sings “Don’t wanna be an American Idiot”. And thats it. He doesn’t explain why or what he means…he just thought it was a cool title. He could have used that as a really good political statement but he doesn’t - hardly punk is it??

Green Day are the soundtrack to middle class momma’s boys putting a padlock round their necks and going to the pub thinking they are punks which cracks me up…as if theres such a thing as rebellion in this day and age! You wish, mummys boys! I wouldn’t mind but the fact they only know one rhythm and and seem to play the same few chords over and over and over on every song makes me want to strangle them, they have the musical ingenuity of 12 year olds which is why you all love them…no challenge required.

Ooh, i just read that back to myself and if you do it in a Dr Cox from Scrubs voice its actually quite an amusing rant! Try it! I’ll be back for more later…thanks for letting me write that. I feel much better! x

Well, you’re the one who seems to think Green Day are still punk - before the new album came out Billie Joe said that it was going to be more power-pop, and it is.

And American Idiot was about being brainwashed by the media, which I think it states pretty clearly in the song.

Nice rant though.

I love Green Day because theyre catchy have great hooks and good singing.

I also love Dream Theater - with their 24 minute songs and 3 minute solos and ever changing tempoes / keys / time signatures.

Music is music. If it makes you happy then listen to it. if it makes you angry - dont listen to it.

Pretty sure there’s a little more to the song than that.

The one on the new album that goes on about Gloria is slowly growing on me, but I’m still more excited about seeing the Offspring next month than Green Day in November

LOL Thanks!

@ Squall - yes point taken but I like to have a band to hate - it gives me energy!
