I know Crooked Timber was influenced by Irish writers such as Becket,
and Joyce (ie. Andy appropriated “my shade will comfort you..” in the title track)
but what other example are there of this in T?’s works?

Wasn’t James Joyces brother-in-law quoted in Potato Junkie?

I’m very interested in this kind of stuff. There’s a good few examples - if you read through the “stories behind the songs” section on this website you’ll find a good few. But here’s some for starters:

“Bukowski day, I’m gonna miss it” (from Six Mile Water off Suicide Pact) - Charles Bukowski was a beat writer who wrote autobiographical novels about dead end jobs in America in the 60s (Post Office etc) - personally I can’t stand his stuff but lots of people (including Andy C) are fans.

The song “Private Nobody” from “One Cure Fits All” is about Slaughterhouse 5 bu Kurt Vonnegut. The main character’s catchphrase is “so it goes” etc.

The song “Jam Jar Jail” starts out with a quote from the 19th C philosopher Nietzche being read in german (it means something like, “how will our children turn out - good or bad?”)

“Jude The Obscene” is a pun on “Jude The Obscure” by Thomas Hardy (which is probably the most depressing book I’ve ever read - good though!)

Thats all I can think of for now!
