Flogging a dead horse, or, the omnipresent ‘tour north america now, please’ thread.

#

Started by revscapegoat

Well, every time T? puts out a new record and starts touring it, I hold my bated breath and ask the question, ‘Will they finally come across the pond to promote this record?’ I know, I know, the promo situation over here is pitiable, compared to Europa, but damn! Surely SOMEONE at the record co. could bankroll a [small] North American tour for the band? Or is that not the issue? Has North America simply let you down one too many times?

Therapy?, I’ve been a fan since Troublegum and, living in podunk Vancouver BC, I haven’t had a chance to see you gents live yet.

You’re pretty much the last band on my list to see, since everybody else I wanted to see I’ve seen already, or they’re simply not worth seeing anymore. But not Therapy? Your music just gets better and better. So come on already. get over here. Shit, if not Vancouver, hit Seattle/Portland/Los Angeles - I’ll make the drive. I’ll buy the tickets. I’ll buy the merch. I’ll stand up front and dance and scream my head off ‘til I’m hoarse. I swear. And I’ll bring others. We’ll ALL buy shit. I promise.

Your one-off in Toronto a couple years ago was such a tease. I was a mouse-click away from beg/borrow/stealing cross-country airfare, with nowhere to stay in TO, just to catch what eventually amounted to a 45-minute set. Cooler heads -er, lighter wallets- eventually prevailed. But fuck it - it would have been worth it. I was soooo jealous when I saw the pics on the related thread.

Toronto?! You bastards! *not still bitter. I swear. That was years ago.*

Nonetheless, I’ll ask again, as I did last time, and the time before that - will the Crooked Timber tour eventually wend its way into North America in 2010, or am I -and your countless other NA fans- shit out of luck unless we travel to the Old World? Sure would love to know a concrete answer if there are ever (EVER) any (ANY) plans to travel across the pond.

Thanks for everything.
Your humble fan,
Kyle

Did you miss the Therapy? tour of North America that finished last month then, huh?

35 gigs in just over two months.

Man, you must have seen it advertised, no? Tickets were super cheap too.

I’d be kicking myself if I were you…

Those lovely people that gave us Anvil , demigods of metal ! We are forever grateful.

And you’re right , the lads should tour the north of America again , why not.
Been looking for holiday destinations for a while and that might just swing it for me.

Nothing to tour / promote (not that cheap to travel across the pond and tour).

on a similar topic a few years ago andy ended up saying fuck you to someone in here, it must be a sour topic for the band. the guys tried to do a tour back in 2001 (?), but apparently it had very little success and it cost andy and michael a lot of money. i guess they aren’t trying it again unless their record company backs them, which is very unlikely to happen anyway.
but i do hope they will finally make it and it’ll be a success :/

@revscapegoat - I can see how keen you are, but maybe you’re coming across a bit too needy? Why don’t you have another go, but be firm, and don’t take any nonsense. Also be prepared to barter a bit. Ask if they are able to meet you halfway, in Greenland, for example, or some small archipelago on the Baffin Sea. That’s what I would do.

Duly noted, mrs. h. Upon reflection, the original post does come across a tad whingey. That said, Greenland sounds a fair compromise.

I can’t blame T? for ignoring North America, as it sounds like it’s a justifiably bitter pill in their camp. I’ve been a die-hard fan since ‘94, and it’s frustrating for me as a fan, that nobody else around seems to have heard of them, or *get* how brilliant a band they are, especially when they -and this is rarity among bands- improve with every release.

Even more frustrating to realize that it’s unlikely I’ll ever see them live unless I come across the pond myself. But you can make damn sure that when I finally do schedule a trip to ol’ Blighty, I’ll be sure that T? is on tour first.

That is a terrible situation to be in. Maybe you should spend 6 months of each year over here - thus increasing your chances of being around either before they leave or after they get back? Although if you were here for 6 months you might well have taken a handful of pills or jumped off a motorway bridge before you had chance to see them :(

Fine, fine. Mock the whingey, bitter, lone Canadian T? fan as you pick-and-choose which five T? gigs to see within an hours’ train ride from your home. Must be nice to live in a country the size of a postage-stamp, with a rail system that actually works. Meanwhile, here in igloo country, a decent gig is 4 days’ journey away by sled dog.
{/satire]

I just looked up the T? 2001 tour diary - it was all east coast US dates. I don’t think they’ve ever played out here. Loooooooooong overdue.

Just for shits’n’giggles - does anyone know where I can find T? tour-date archives going back into the ’90s?

Quick thought Rev - its does say on the labels site, and the main site here when they signed it, that it was a global deal and if the albums been doing well - judging by the myspace post about the sales I’d say it was - then maybe they would look at going over to support it. I think the myspace one was only about Europe but you’d have to check that.

Anyway, their may be hope for that side of the Atlantic yet!!

Hey Rev, right there with you brother. Come to North America! I’d travel from Missouri, USA to Vancouver (if they’ll let me in) to see T?
I got on the T? bandwagon later than you. I heard “Misery” as part of mixed record company promotional cassette (yeah, it was that long ago) and thought the band was worth looking into. Glad I did. Been a big fan ever since.

I understand the band’s mistrust of record companies and promises of promotion after getting their legs cut out from under them after Infernal Love but why the hell do we North American fans pay the price for the record company’s jackassery?

Hey Rev - been watching Corner Gas here in the US. Are all Canadian TV shows that funny? Love that show.

That gig list has had an interesting life! It was originally started by Alex on his suicidepact.com site that ran from 1996 to 2005. Luckily, An (soul doubt) had the info saved before the site disappeared and passed it to Darren (dmw_ops) who has maintained it since then on his http://tinpan.fortunecity.com/oldsquire/964/tgigology.htm site. It’s also on Soul Doubt’s page now as well (just in case one of the two sites goes, we’ll still have the other!).

I guess untill Therapy? decide to post an official gig history here, the unofficial ones will suffice despite the fact the early years are very incomplete.

Throw in The Tragically Hip too and we’re onto a winner.

Any promoters in the Vancouver area to throw a little line out ?

I’d love to have a full archive on here but I’m honestly not sure if the band have kept a record any more accurate than yours! Once all the new design developments have been done I shall start nagging for this sort of thing :)

Michaels diary of April 24th says he’s recorded virtually every rehearsal and live gig. Maybe in 2010 when Crooked Tour is over and the band is focusing on their 20 year anniversary*, they can look at documenting all the dates, recording sessions etc. It would tie in nicely with the Babyteeth & Pleasure Death re-issues.

*They say it’s 20 years next year, but we all know it’s 20 this year!
In fact, if you count ‘em up, 2009 is their 21st year :-)

Going by your performance on a pub terrace in Tilburg you probably have them all in your head and can fill in any hiatus Michael might have straight away ;)

Had a very quick look myself but might have missed some cancelled ones that I counted , and it looks very much like the big number 1000 is one of the very recent ones or maybe one they are doing in the very near future.

Anything for a party and all that but surely we can’t let a milestone like that go unnoticed !

I took up your challenge (as I’m bored today) and after a quick-fire count (and after putting my anorak on), the lads played their 1000th show in 2006, at least that’s according to the list.
The fact that so little is known about 1989-1991, I reckon they probably played their 1000th show circa 2003/04.

Busiest years: 1993 (137 gigs) and 1994 (131).
Quietest years: 1997 (8 gigs) and 2008 (5).

Way, waaaaaaaaaaay overdue. Ha ha, T? with Anvil and the Hip? I mean, sure, I’d go to see T? anyway, but I’d probably go early just to see that horrible mess of openers - wonder how well the fans of each band would mix.

Yes, yes, everyone is pissing themselves over Anvil ‘cos of this new documentary, but truth be told, they weren’t ever really THAT good to begin with. Didn’t the interviews with Lemmy & Lars (in the documentary) strike anyone else as a little… forced? Every time I hear the ‘demi-gods of metal’ tag, I giggle. I met the Lips and Robb at the premiere here, and hey, nice enough dudes, but I think they’re taking themselves a little too seriously these days.

As for the Hip - so, they DO have fans elsewhere in the world besides Canada? I always thought they were only big here because Canadians appear to be the only people in the world who celebrate mediocrity. Sorry, just my opinion. Never got the Hip, always thought they sounded like a bar band who made it big in Canada. Go figure.

For my money, T? should tour with Turbonegro. That would be -as the kids say- the shit.
