Haha he will be back if they decide to record a new album… he did write all the songs ;)
@ Grant… guess it depends on what you like and maybe it is an age thing. They were very influential an broke barriers with a mixed race bands, i always liked them as they had that good mix of punk and reggae but in a good old school way not in a rancid way.

I think that’s generally the case - bands that are ground-breaking can only be truly appreciated at the time. Other bands will take what they have done and develop it, so people much younger they will grow up knowing loads of bands that are doing similar things and will rarely understand what is so special about the originals.
It’s like with the Sex Pistols, they were shockingly bad but they were still truly original and formed the basis for a brilliant new genre. The Specials were just as refreshing at the time - really politically vocal and the blend of ska and punk was appreciated by punks, skinheads, black and white alike so it really brought people together on a scale that had never happened before. It’s a cliche, but you had to be there ;)
I was going to say that the same is bound to happen with the bands that have been ground-breaking for your generation, but in truth I find most contemporary music very similar, and I don’t know whether that’s because it really is like that or because I’m just too old to understand the differences!

here’s a question from someone who can’t be arsed to Google it:
How come the Free Nelson Mandella track was credited to Special AKA..? What was the deal there…? Was it not the full Specials? An offshoot? ex-members…?

Well put it this way, i fail to see where the “fun” part came into the equation. Unless it was Hall putting streaks in his hair and “teasing” it a bit. Clearly fun for him. Cuntish to the rest of us.

They were Special AKA first, then The Specials. I think after Terry left the rest of the band went back to using the old name through choice, but maybe it was a legal thing?

They were the special aka in the start.. so the first few singles were under that name and then they changed it when the album came out.. and then when the singers left they went back to it. No legal trouble from what i can remember.
