The Wall Of Mouths Desert Sessions.. type thing.

After Not being inspired for a while with writing songs i’ve just had a big surge and more so with writing and working with other people after always doing everything myself. With Josh Homme having a new band out and listening to the Desert session stuff he does it made me think about just trying new things and styles. I know there are a lot of people on this board that play different instruments to different degrees and different levels of song writing, and it seems more people have home recording studios of some sorts.

So was wondering if people felt like trying an experiment and over the internet trying to see if we can get something going. If you have a whole song but need people to add other guitars or bass or drums. Then see if someone on here can do it, if you just have a cool riff then fine and see what someone else can come up with to add to it. I guess if lots of people come up with ideas for one song then either vote or whoever has the first idea then decides. Not sure how it work yet but lets see if its something that anyone wants to do? I have a few songs that would be good to get some real drums and bass put on to.

What do people think?

We did this on another forum that I’m on, but instead of working on each-others songs, we covered an entire album by the band instead. It can be really good fun. I’m glad someone suggested it on here :)

Cool, i’m glad people are interested… at the moment if some people are up for laying down some bass and some drums then i have a song i have been messing around with. I have been writing lyrics but i don’t rate myself as a singer.
It would be cool to get a collection of songs together. I can upload somewhere what i have so far?

You fancy digging out your bass again?

Maybe a cover would be a good way to get the ball rolling, either that or I have bits and bobs of songs i can zip and upload and then if something catches attention and wants to be used and added to then we could do it that way.
It would be god to have some suggestions of how to do this?

I’ve been struggling to play of late - My left wrist is shot at, and reaching more than 3 frets sends a shooting pain down my arm :(

I don’t know if the tendon might be damaged, I’m not sure if its a kickboxing injury gone bad or not.

But its still a cool idea!

That’s not good about the wrist.. sorry to hear that.

So what sort of style of music would you normally play? I guess i drift mainly to stoner rock something with a bit of groove but i’m trying to do other things.

Okay here is a zip of a few old ideas and things i found on my music drive from a good few years ago. One i some reason thought sounded like alice in chains but now really doesn;t and the other is just segments of some song i did one day which was about 12 mins long… the intro i like and the chorus riffs i still like but the rest is a bit of a hump of shit but workable. I have been slowly sorting through old ideas and jam sessions. A lot of them are just being deleted out of fear of people ever hearing. Its strange how at one point you thought an idea was the best thing you had ever heard and only a few hours later you realise its a steaming turd. :)

Sounds like fun, and in theory I’m up for it. Though whether I can actually contribute anything is another matter…

Seems like the biggest problem is synchronising everything. We need a click track, really, plus some way to minimise soundcard latency issues. Not sure what’s best, though.

listen carefully though - it’s quite subtle…

(sorry it’s so big - saved it as a wav due to technical chaos :S

The first 50 seconds are definitely the best bit, but I’m still pretty sure Simon will agree that your vocals are what will really give a brand and identity to the project :)

All the drums i programmed… it would be better to have real drums, i generally go a bit over the top instead of having a simple click. Bass for Alice would be cool :) so far thats really all i have for the song so if you can think of any other parts for it that would be great. The first part of it was a bit more thought out then it just went into something i just came up with on the spot..call it a verse or just a load of rubbish ;)

But please anyone is welcome .. just use what ever you like add to it and a bit like a puzzle we can put together a rough version of a song with all the contributions and then trim it if needs be and record a proper version. So guess it will be quite a bit of sending stuff back and forward. I can try and do a cleaner version of the alice riff with just one guitar and a click track if that helps people.

Excellent :) which version did you think was the better… i’m slowly coming round to the alt chorus as it flows better and is less jerky but the other one is more of a “riff” and other comments or stuff you want to change then go for it :)

Just so you know the song is in drop D tuning.

I was kinda drifting towards the alt chorus as well… I’ll break out the basses and amps and fx tonight and fiddle around a bit.
