The videos are great! I was wondering whether there are any plans to either put others up or change which ones are up, because there are loads of videos that I haven’t seen (not for want of trying)

I think Rene is currently plotting a rotation of videos, due to bandwidth restrictions there’s a limit to how much can be on the site at any one time.

The homepage will always show the latest site updates so just keep an eye on it :)

Yep, proper date was March 4th, 1994.

Also, “Innocent Abstraction” was recorded on 15/8/91 not 1992, as stated.

Sort it out, official site people!

:D

Hey Rene, You have to do something about this bandwidth restriction, I’ve noticed theboards get slow sometmes, at a guess I’d say because someone downloading a video. Could you not put all media stuff on the server that http://www.teethgrinder.com is on, if you have room?

The performance of the server by itself is generally very good, and someone downloading a video shouldn’t have a huge impact on the rest of the site. The fact that the boards may be slow for you sometimes is due to something else like database performance or Internet congestion, for example. I always keep an eye on server performance and try to solve any possible issues asap, and I do appreciate your comments.

Also, since it’s not a matter of disk space on the server (there’s more than enough of that on both sites), but a matter of available bandwidth (which is never unlimited, even though a lot of webhosts claim to offer that), I cannot move the media to the teethgrinder.com server as I have bandwidth limits there which are much lower then the limits for this site.

hee hee hee ;) Sorry.

What exactly is bandwidth, and what factors define limits on it? Not being remotely techy, I haven’t a clue how it works but am mildy curious.

*has visions of Rene as Mr Burns “Release the hounds…”* heh heh.

I’m not in the slightest bit technical, and no doubt somebody (hopefully Rene ;)) will come and correct me soon.

But in laymans terms, everybody who connects to the website uses up a little bit of bandwidth, i.e. the space made available by the host for looking at the site. If somebody downloads, they’re using up more bandwidth than if they were simply looking at a page and if lots of people are downloading then it uses up even more.

The limit is defined by the host, who says you can have a certain amount of bandwidth per day/month/whatever and if you want to increase it then they charge more money. Thus it’s necessary to restrict how much can be downloaded in a day so that T? don’t get lumped with a very large bill and shoot us all. :D

Hope that made sense!

Some, but err, what is it?

I understand that you buy space etc etc, therefore there are limits on how much is available to the site, but when it’s all just beeps down phonelines, I don’t understand why space gets used up over time - surely after person A downloads something, they leave the ‘space’ vacant for person B, therefore space isn’t used up as such, just temporarily occupied, like a phone being engaged?

Please let me know if anyone thinks there are probably more serious things in my life to worry about.

I had to look this up (and I’m a computer engineer!) cos I couldn’t think how to put it.

http://www.dictionary.com :-
A data transmission rate; the maximum amount of information (bits/second) that can be transmitted along a channel

Basically we access the web server through a connection, this connection has limits on the amount of data it can pass daily, by downloading videos we are using more of that bandwidth blah blah blah :o:o:o

hahaha. well.. hopefully not stepping
on toes.. but uh..

perhaps Citizen Erased’s suggestion isn’t
so far fetched.. ?

suicidepact.com is working on an audio
section of sorts.. it’s actually been
in the works for a while.. audio not
video just because well.. we don’t have
much video around that’s really worth
the bandwidth suck, the audio seemed a
better use..

but perhaps we can host some of this
site’s videos?..

we’re working out a scheme on how to do
it without making asses of ourselves to
the isp where the machine lives. we’re
not limited in bw technically.. but
don’t want to take advantage of the
generosity that’s been shown to me on
that front.

give it a thought. if you’re interested,
lemme know rene… we’ll need to nail
down our end on how we’re going to do
it (limit the bandwidth draw) before
it can happen, but that could probably
be done quick if the time allows.
